Tapo T110 becomes a Matter contact sensor only after a compatible Tapo hub does the translating. The sensor sends its open or closed state over Tapo's low-power sub-GHz link; an H100, H110, H200, or H500 hub then presents it to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant as part of a Matter bridge.
That extra box is the buying decision. T110 costs $19.99 and can be practical when one hub will serve several Tapo sensors. It is unnecessary infrastructure when this is the only door or window you want to monitor.
The hub is part of the sensor
T110 does not contain Wi-Fi or Thread and cannot be commissioned directly with the Matter code flow used by a native accessory. Pair it with the Tapo hub in the Tapo app first. Update the hub, confirm that the contact state changes correctly, and then use the hub's Bind to Matter setting to generate a QR code or manual pairing code for the destination ecosystem.
This path needs two different pieces of infrastructure: the Tapo hub that talks to the sensor and a Matter controller for the platform receiving the bridge. It does not need a Thread border router. TP-Link currently identifies H100, H110, H200, and H500 as bridge options, but hardware versions and firmware availability vary by region. Check the exact hub before buying sensors around it.
Open and closed is the portable job
The sensor and magnet mount with adhesive and can sit up to 15 mm apart. TP-Link suggests doors, windows, cabinets, refrigerators, and mailboxes, although the 0 to 40 degree Celsius operating range makes this an indoor device. A replaceable CR2032 battery powers it, with TP-Link estimating more than one year from 60 triggers per day.
Through Matter, the useful shared fact is whether the contact is open or closed. TP-Link's bridge guide says compatible sensors become visible in all five Matterhome ecosystems, including Home Assistant. It does not say that Tapo's event history, battery warnings, phone notifications, Smart Actions, or hub-siren rules transfer with the contact state. Keep those jobs in Tapo unless the destination platform proves otherwise.
Build the routine after testing both sides
Place and pair one sensor before mounting several. Open and close the door in Tapo, share the hub to the intended ecosystem, and repeat the test there. A delayed or missing state can come from the sensor-to-hub radio path, the hub's network connection, or the Matter integration, so confirm each hop before building an unattended routine.
T110 makes sense when a Tapo hub is already useful and inexpensive contact sensors are the expansion plan. For a single opening or a home deliberately avoiding brand bridges, Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 or Eve Door & Window keeps the path direct over Matter and Thread.
