Meross Matter Smart Water Leak Sensor Kit (MS405HMA)

MS405HMA is worth buying for one remote leak-risk spot because the sensor and hub each sound an alarm, and the kit includes batteries plus a regional power adapter. Choose ThirdReality KM1 when three monitored locations matter more than a siren at each sensor, or a direct-Matter alarm when avoiding a proprietary hub matters most.

What we like

  • Both the sensor and the hub sound a 100 dB alarm
  • Included hub can use Ethernet after its initial Wi-Fi setup
  • Batteries and the selected regional power adapter are included

What could be better

  • One-sensor kit costs the same as ThirdReality's three-sensor kit
  • Every sensor depends on the proprietary MSH450 hub
  • Matter alert behavior is not documented for each listed platform

Two alarms are the reason to buy it

Meross MS405HMA is a one-sensor leak kit with an alarm at both ends of its radio link. The battery-powered MS405 sounds where water is detected, while the included MSH450 hub sounds again wherever it is plugged in. That arrangement is useful when the leak risk is in a basement, utility space or cabinet where one alarm may be difficult to hear.

Meross specifies 100 dB for the dual-alarm system. We have not measured either siren or tested how well the hub relays a signal through walls. The advertised 100 m range is an open-area claim; floors, pipes and appliances can reduce it. Place the hub somewhere audible and test the complete alert path before relying on it.

The sensor has probes on its top and underside. That gives rising water another route to trigger an alert, but it does not cover the length of a pipe like a sensing cable. This is best treated as protection for one carefully chosen spot, not an entire room.

Matter lives in the included hub

The MS405 is not a direct Matter sensor. It sends readings over 433 MHz to the MSH450, and that hub acts as the Matter bridge. The exact hub is certified as a Matter 1.2 aggregator over Wi-Fi; it can also use Ethernet after its initial Wi-Fi setup. A Thread border router is not required.

Meross currently lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings compatibility for the kit. Its product manual predates that store claim and still says Apple and Alexa did not support the Matter leak-sensor type at the time it was written. Meross also provides general Matter pairing instructions, but not a current platform-by-platform account of which leak alerts, automations or silencing controls appear for MS405HMA. Treat all four integrations as limited until you have verified the notification you need. Home Assistant is not listed for this exact kit.

The Meross app remains useful for setup, firmware updates, alarm history and exports. Its history covers two years. Removing a Meross Matter device from the Meross app can reset it, so multi-platform households should use each platform's Matter sharing flow rather than casually deleting the hub from Meross.

The box is complete, but not cheap per location

On October 4, 2026, the kit was listed at $39.99 in Meross's global USD store with a choice of US, EU or UK power adapter. It includes the hub, one sensor and two replaceable AAA batteries. The sensor-only option was $26.99 on its available European variant and requires an existing MSH450.

Meross says the batteries can last more than three years, while its November 2024 manual says up to 24 months. We would budget around the documented 24-month figure rather than the newer store estimate. The manual requires 1.5 V alkaline cells and rules out 1.2 V batteries.

The closest value comparison is ThirdReality KM1. It was also listed at $39.99, but includes three sensors and one central alarm. Its batteries and USB power adapter cost extra, and it does not put a siren in each sensor. Choose ThirdReality for wider coverage; choose Meross for a complete one-location kit with an audible warning at the leak and the hub.

IKEA KLIPPBOK is the simpler alternative where it is sold. Each inexpensive unit has a local alarm and connects directly over Matter over Thread, avoiding a proprietary bridge. Its connected alert support is also platform-dependent, and remote use needs suitable Thread infrastructure.

MS405HMA makes the most sense for one high-consequence location where two audible alarms justify a hub. If you need three or more monitored spots, its per-location cost and bridge dependency become harder to defend.

KM1 is useful when you want three leak locations feeding one alarm that can sit somewhere audible. Its $39.99 price excludes batteries, a power adapter and delivery, so it is not automatically cheaper than separate sensors. Choose it for the central alarm layout; choose independent sensors when each location needs its own local warning.

KLIPPBOK is a useful inexpensive local water alarm for a sink cabinet or appliance area. Its value is clearest within earshot; buying it mainly for alerts while away is less convincing unless your chosen smart home has a supported leak-notification path.
