The luxury is arriving without doing anything

Sense Pro's attraction is easy to understand when you arrive carrying shopping: the lock can recognise an approaching Apple device and open without a tap or a free finger. Its plain face hides the illuminated keypad until you need it. That is a more restrained look than a prominent fingerprint reader and keyhole, although there is still a substantial battery housing inside.

Schlage's Converge system uses ultra-wideband measurements of direction and distance to judge the approach. It offers three modes: automatic unlocking, a touch to confirm entry, or a short delay at the door. Having that choice is useful for an entrance beside a busy passageway or a household that prefers a deliberate action before unlocking.

We have not tested its ability to distinguish passing the door from entering, or compared its response time with other locks. Schlage's precision claims are the manufacturer's claims. The adjustable behavior is a reason to shortlist it, not evidence that it will be flawless at every entrance.

Check the device in your pocket

Hands-free entry and tapping a home key have different requirements. Schlage's current list supports hands-free access on iPhone 11 and later, but excludes the second- and third-generation SE, 16e and 17e. Apple Watch Series 6 and later qualify, excluding SE. Compatible software and Thread infrastructure are also required.

Tap-to-unlock reaches further back: Schlage lists iPhone XS and later and Apple Watch Series 4 and later with the specified current software. A phone that supports a wallet tap is therefore not automatically a hands-free device. This distinction matters more than the age or price of the phone.

As of September 10, 2026, Schlage still describes Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet support as coming after Aliro certification. Android users can manage the lock through Schlage Home today, but should not pay this premium expecting a released Android wallet key. Ordinary Matter support does not establish wallet compatibility.

The missing keyhole is a tradeoff

Sense Pro replaces the deadbolt and removes mechanical-key entry altogether. A PIN works without a phone, and the exterior USB-C port can temporarily power the lock if its four AA batteries are flat. You still need a valid way to unlock; connecting power does not bypass the lock. The port is an emergency supply, not a charger for the AA cells.

That arrangement avoids carrying a key but also removes the spare-key option a neighbour may already hold. If retaining a physical backup matters, choose a different lock. There is no fingerprint reader either.

The BE889 package fits the specified 1⅜–1¾-inch door thickness and 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset. Its inside housing projects 2½ inches, so check space around nearby trim and handles. Schlage estimates up to six months from the batteries under standard use; door friction, usage and connectivity affect the interval. We have not measured it.

Useful app features without abandoning Apple Home

Schlage Home provides scheduled guest codes, activity history, notifications and the entrance-mode settings, with built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for remote access. Apple Home can operate alongside it and manage always-active access codes. There is no need to choose one app permanently at the expense of the other.

That makes Sense Pro useful in a mixed-phone household: an Android user can administer access while an eligible Apple user gets the approach feature. It does not give both users identical entry methods. A Matter controller and Thread border router are needed for the Matter path; Wi-Fi alone does not supply Apple hands-free access.

A $399 convenience upgrade needs a clear reason

Schlage listed the lock at $399 in the US on September 10, with free standard US shipping. The lever or knob packages start at $449; the handleset package starts at $499. Buy those extras only if the existing handle also needs replacing. A separately purchased $129 HomePod mini brings a new Apple hub-and-lock purchase to $528 before tax; reuse suitable existing hub hardware when possible.

The Aqara U400 was $269.99, saving $129.01 while also offering Apple hands-free entry, fingerprints and a physical key. Sense Pro must win on its appearance, preferred Schlage controls and adjustable approach modes to justify the difference. Its price alone is no proof of better security or reliability.

Choose the $169.99 U200 if keeping the existing exterior deadbolt and adding taps or fingerprints is enough. Level Lock Pro is the more discreet whole-lock replacement, with a conventional keyhole, if hands-free UWB is unnecessary. And if your current lock already gives you convenient home-key taps, keeping it is a sound decision.
