Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt

Schlage Sense Pro is a premium Matter-over-Thread deadbolt that makes the most sense for Apple Home users who want Home Key and hands-free UWB unlocking. Treat the broader Matter and Aliro story as promising but still worth verifying before paying launch pricing.

The Apple-first Schlage Matter lock

Schlage Sense Pro is the company's first Matter-over-Thread deadbolt, but the cleanest launch story is still Apple Home. Schlage says hands-free unlock is available through Apple home keys at launch, using compatible iPhone or Apple Watch hardware, UWB, and a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible Thread border router.

That makes the Sense Pro easiest to understand as a premium Apple-first lock with Matter underneath. It may still be useful in other ecosystems, but the product documentation is most specific about Apple home keys, Schlage Home, and Thread.

What Thread changes

Thread is the right network choice for a battery-powered lock. It avoids making the lock live on Wi-Fi for normal Matter control, and Schlage says Matter over Thread should keep the lock connected to compatible devices in the home even if Wi-Fi goes out.

The catch is infrastructure. A Matter-over-Thread lock needs a Thread mesh and a border router. For Apple hands-free unlock with home key, Schlage names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router running current software.

What stays in Schlage Home

The Schlage Home app is still part of the buyer story. Schlage lists remote access, admin virtual keys, guest access-code management, history logs, auto-lock settings, and hands-free entrance modes as Schlage Home features.

That matters because Matter lock support does not automatically mean every advanced lock feature appears in every smart home app. Treat Matter as the control path, then assume Schlage Home may still be needed for the full access-management surface.

The Android and Aliro caveat

Schlage says Sense Pro is Aliro compatible and is expected to support Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet digital keys later this year after certification. That could become the reason Android buyers care about the lock.

It is not the launch-day reason. If you need Android UWB hands-free unlock or NFC tap-to-unlock, wait until Schlage publishes the certification status, compatible devices, and wallet rollout details.

Who should buy it

Buy the Sense Pro if you want a full deadbolt replacement, already have Apple Home Thread infrastructure, and value Home Key plus hands-free UWB unlocking enough to pay the premium price. It is also a better fit if you are comfortable keeping Schlage Home for codes, logs, and lock-specific settings.

Skip it for now if your home is centered on Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant and you need more than basic Matter lock control. Schlage may get there, but a $399 launch lock should not make you guess about the access method you plan to use every day.

Best for

  • Apple Home households with a Thread-capable home hub
  • Buyers replacing a full deadbolt rather than retrofitting existing hardware
  • Homes that value Schlage hardware and app-managed access features

Skip if

  • You mainly use Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant and need proven full-feature lock behavior today
  • You do not have a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible Thread border router near the entry
  • You want Android UWB or wallet unlock support at launch
