Aqara Smart Lock U200

A persuasive retrofit when your existing lock is sound and you want fingerprint, PIN and Apple home key access without changing its exterior. The included keypad makes the $169.99 US package useful, but the large interior motor, two sets of batteries and cylinder requirements are real tradeoffs. Spend on a replacement cylinder only if keeping the rest of the lock is still worthwhile.

What we like

  • Preserves compatible exterior lock hardware and existing keys
  • Fingerprint reader, PIN keypad and Apple home key included
  • Physical interior knob and a quieter motor mode
  • Rechargeable lock battery can charge while fitted

What could be better

  • Cylinder fit may require a replacement or an adapter
  • Bulky interior motor plus a second device to mount outside
  • Lock and keypad have separate batteries to maintain
  • A cylinder motor cannot lift an existing door handle

Keep the key, add better ways to enter

U200's best idea is leaving a good existing lock in place. The interior motor turns its cylinder or deadbolt, while a separate outdoor keypad adds fingerprints, PINs and Apple home key taps. Family members can choose a method they like without replacing every physical key or changing the outside lock cylinder when the existing one is compatible.

That makes it appealing for an apartment entrance or a front door with exterior hardware worth keeping. The keypad is included, which matters when comparing a rival's cheaper motor-only price. This is the full U200 package, not the separate U200 Lite.

It is a conspicuous addition inside. The motor measures about 153 × 62 × 61 mm, and the keypad is roughly 146 × 43 × 33 mm. Keeping the old keyhole does not mean the finished installation is small.

A retrofit can still need a new cylinder

For European mortise locks, Aqara supports Euro-profile and selected Scandinavian cylinders. A cylinder that holds a key inside must still allow the outside key to operate it. Aqara calls this an emergency function; it is a physical cylinder feature, not something software adds.

The manual also limits an inserted key to 5 mm thickness and a 39 mm handle length. An interior thumb turn must be removable for the appropriate adapter. US installation covers compatible single-cylinder deadbolts with 60 or 70 mm backsets.

Those details separate a straightforward retrofit from a cylinder replacement and locksmith bill. Aqara also treats the adapters as wear parts that may need replacement after roughly two years; that is maintenance guidance, not a guaranteed failure date.

If your multipoint door requires lifting the handle before locking, the U200's cylinder motor does not perform that lift. A lock that needs pushing, pulling or lifting into alignment remains a poor candidate for unattended locking until the mechanical problem is addressed.

The keypad is useful, but it is another device

Fingerprint access is the strongest reason to choose this package over an app-only motor. It can suit someone who does not want to carry a phone to the door. Apple home key adds a tap with a compatible iPhone or Watch; it does not unlock merely because you approach with your phone in a pocket.

The keypad can be attached with the supplied adhesive or screws, and Aqara recommends placing it within two meters of the motor. Its IPX5 rating applies to the outdoor keypad, not the interior lock motor. A neat place for both pieces matters more than the product photograph suggests.

We have not tested fingerprint accuracy, motor noise or battery endurance. Quiet mode is a useful option for late arrivals, but we cannot call the mechanism silent. A physical interior knob remains available for ordinary manual operation.

Two power sources need attention

The standard package includes a rechargeable battery for the motor and four AAA cells for the keypad. Aqara's up-to-six-month estimate assumes about eight daily lock/unlock actions; actual use, resistance and temperature can change it.

The lock can charge while fitted, using a power bank and the supplied hanging pouch. The keypad can instead use a suitable 12–24 V AC/DC supply. Wiring the keypad does not continuously power the separate motor. The AA adapter supplied with the UK U200+ Kit is another package difference, not a standard accessory to assume in every region.

Local Aqara settings work over Bluetooth without buying a brand hub. Matter remote control needs a suitable controller and Thread border router; remote Aqara functions use a compatible Aqara Thread controller, such as M200. Apple home key also needs a supported Apple home setup.

Good value when the existing hardware deserves to stay

On September 10, 2026, the standard U200 was $169.99 US or €189.99 at Aqara's EU store. The UK Shop's U200+ Kit was £188.99 including VAT, with an NFC tag, alternative cover and AA adapter. The US offer qualifies for free standard contiguous-US/DC delivery, the EU offer for the policy's listed Germany/France/Italy/Spain destinations, and the UK offer for free UK delivery. Cylinder changes and any required hub remain extra.

For a compatible US deadbolt, U400 was $100 more in hardware and adds supported hands-free entry while replacing the lock. U200 is the better starting point when taps or fingerprints are enough and keeping the cylinder matters. Keep a working smart lock if it already gives the household convenient, dependable entry.

U400 earns its premium when supported Apple hands-free entry solves a daily nuisance, such as arriving with bags or gloves. Fingerprints and Wallet taps are useful fallbacks, but they do not require buying into every UWB promise. Samsung buyers should treat it as a tap-to-unlock lock today: Aqara confirmed the hands-free feature was still delayed in August 2026.
