Ring plans a US smart lock for early 2027 with a hand-powered backup. Connected control uses Amazon Sidewalk; Matter support has not been announced.

Ring announced its Smart Lock on October 7, 2026, with a dial that generates backup power by hand when the battery runs out. US availability is planned for early 2027. The official listing, checked October 9, shows $249.99 and a notification signup, not an order button. Neither primary page announces a Matter setup path.

The proposed lock makes more sense for a household committed to Ring and Alexa than one choosing a lock for Matter control. Its unusual backup is worth considering, but it is not a reason to postpone a purchase that needs Apple Home or another Matter platform.

Entry and remote control have different dependencies

Amazon says the lock offers fingerprint, keypad, Ring app and Alexa access. At-door unlocking happens on the lock; remote locking, status updates and PIN syncing use Amazon Sidewalk. Those connected functions avoid dependence on the home's Wi-Fi, but still depend on Sidewalk coverage. Amazon links an approximate coverage map and warns that service can vary or be interrupted.

That distinction matters when comparing backup features: restoring power at the door and keeping remote administration available solve different problems. Alexa support alone does not establish a Matter pairing or sharing route. Ring's launch material gives buyers no basis to count on one.

Compare the backup as well as the platform

The existing Schlage Sense Pro offers a useful comparison: Schlage documents both Matter over Thread and an exterior USB-C port for temporary power. It still needs an external power source, whereas Ring proposes generating that emergency power at the lock. Choose the platform and backup method together; the dial is only one part of the decision.

Matterhome has not tested Ring's mechanism or reliability. Amazon's announcement also says the lock is awaiting FCC authorization. Treat early 2027 as a launch plan, and wait for final installation and compatibility documentation before committing to it.
