Google TV Streamer (4K)

More appealing as a TV upgrade than a spare hub

Google TV Streamer gives an older television a dedicated Google TV interface while adding a Matter hub and Thread border router. The useful everyday details are its built-in Ethernet connection, a remote that can be made to ring when misplaced, and a customizable button for an app, input or the home-control panel.

That panel is a good reason to consider the streamer in a Google Home household: you can adjust compatible devices from the television instead of reaching for a phone. The box combines those controls with its streaming job. It is less compelling if the TV already has an interface you like and another device already handles Thread.

Google's September 10, 2026 listings were $149.99 in the US, £149 in the UK and €169 in Germany. Those are reference prices subject to local checkout terms. At this level, it should solve a visible problem with the television as well as provide background home-hub functions.

The storage and connections are the practical upgrades

The streamer has 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of memory, compared with 8 GB and 2 GB in Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Extra app space is useful if the older stick feels cramped. The increase does not by itself establish that every app will be faster or that pictures will look better.

Video support includes up to 4K60, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, with Dolby Atmos among the audio formats. Appropriate content and playback equipment still determine what you can use. The network choice is useful too: Gigabit Ethernet is built in, while wireless networking remains 802.11ac rather than Wi-Fi 6 or 6E.

Its shape is meant to sit near the television instead of plugging invisibly into the HDMI socket like a stick. The box includes a power adapter, power cable and remote batteries, but an HDMI cable is separate. Account for the shelf space and any cable you need before ordering.

TV audio is now another reason to consider it

Google documents connecting one or two 2026 Home Speakers for streamer audio. Two support a stereo arrangement and simulated Spatial Audio with suitable content. This is a specific combination, not a promise that every older Nest speaker can become the same TV-audio system.

At current US list prices, the streamer and two Home Speakers total $349.97 before tax or an HDMI cable. That may be interesting when buying both streaming and audio hardware. If you already have satisfactory TV speakers or a soundbar, it is an optional extra rather than a reason to replace them.

Keep the purchase tied to a real need

The Thread border router can be useful to Home Assistant as well as the Google Home setup; Home Assistant still provides its own Matter controller. That is another reason to reuse an existing streamer rather than buy duplicate infrastructure.

Google lists a minimum security-update commitment through September 24, 2029. That provides a clearer remaining commitment than the older Nest Hub, but does not make the streamer a substitute for a bedside screen or room speaker.

For an Apple Home household, the 128 GB Apple TV 4K is the relevant controller-and-streamer comparison, albeit at a higher checked US price. Within Google Home, keep a working Chromecast or built-in TV interface if you do not need the storage, Ethernet, home panel or Thread additions. Those concrete benefits make the upgrade worthwhile; the newer enclosure alone does not.
