Cheap, useful, and still Thread-dependent
GRILLPLATS is the indoor IKEA smart plug in the new Matter line. It turns a lamp or small appliance into a smart device, and IKEA says it can also track power usage. Because it uses Matter over Thread, it belongs in a home that already has a Thread border router or plans to add one.
The low price is the draw. The hidden cost is infrastructure. Without Thread, this is not a simple Wi-Fi smart plug.
Setup path
You can pair GRILLPLATS directly with a Matter controller that supports Thread, or add it through DIRIGERA and IKEA Home smart. IKEA also sells a bundle with a remote control. That bundle is useful for a lamp or appliance you want to control without opening an app.
Keep the Matter code accessible. For outlets behind furniture or in tight multi-gang locations, scan and label before the plug disappears behind the appliance.
What to verify
Basic on and off control should be the easy part. Energy data is the part to check. Matter support can move power information, but each ecosystem decides how much of that information it shows and where it can be used in automations.
Home Assistant and SmartThings buyers may care about individual entities and reporting behavior. Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa buyers should assume normal switch control first and verify energy features before buying many plugs.
Should you buy it?
Buy GRILLPLATS for a lamp, fan, or small appliance in a Thread home. Skip it if you only need the cheapest Wi-Fi plug, if your outlet spacing is tight, or if detailed energy history in a specific app is the real requirement.
Best for
- Lamps and simple appliances in a Thread home
- Buyers who want an inexpensive powered Thread accessory
- IKEA setups that benefit from a remote bundle
Skip if
- You do not have a Matter controller with Thread border router support
- You need guaranteed energy charts in every ecosystem app
- The outlet spacing cannot handle a wider plug body
