What we like
- Two outlets with separate physical and Cync app controls
- Documented -20°C to 50°C operating range
- Direct Wi-Fi route avoids buying Thread hardware
What could be better
- Matter and Cync app modes cannot be used at the same time
- $39.95 US price is twice the current IKEA Thread alternative
- No dimming or energy measurement is documented
A defensible Wi-Fi choice for a cold patio
Cync's outdoor plug is worth considering when one receptacle needs to run two different loads and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi already reaches the yard. Its two sockets have separate power buttons, and the Cync app can give them different schedules. More unusually, the exact manual states an operating range of -20°C to 50°C. That makes the winter case easier to judge than it is for an outdoor plug with conflicting temperature guidance.
The checked Apple price was $39.95 in the United States and CA$54.95 in Canada. That is not cheap for basic switching. The argument for paying it is a specific combination of two outlets, direct Wi-Fi and a documented cold-weather range, not the Cync name or the Matter logo alone.
Two outlets share one load limit
The two sockets can run patio lights on one schedule and a small fountain on another, but they share a 15 A maximum for general use. The motor rating is 1/3 HP. This is one power supply with two switches, not two independent 15 A circuits.
The enclosure is rated IP64 and rainproof when installed as directed. Cync requires a grounded GFCI receptacle, vertical mounting with the sockets facing down, and at least 30 cm of clearance above the ground. Unused sockets should remain covered. Matterhome has not tested its weather resistance, Wi-Fi range or long-term reliability.
Neither socket dims a load, and Cync does not document energy measurement. The plug fits decorations, ordinary lights and suitable small outdoor equipment that only need on/off control. It is the wrong purchase for bright string lights that need softening or for a buyer trying to measure a pump's consumption.
Matter and the Cync app are an either-or choice
The exact CPLGOD2BLMS model uses Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Apple's store page incorrectly labels it Matter over Thread, but both Cync and the current certification record identify Wi-Fi. No Thread border router is required, although the selected platform still needs a compatible Matter controller.
Cync makes the initial setup choice more consequential than it should be. A plug set up in the Cync app cannot also connect directly through Matter. Choose Cync mode for its native schedules and remote controls, or choose Matter for direct use in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or another controller. Cync documents sharing with as many as five Matter ecosystems, so the Matter route is not limited to one platform.
Do not assume every controller will present the two sockets separately. Cync specifically warns that a Google Home-only setup can combine them as one device. Home Assistant can control devices through its Matter integration, but Cync does not document exact feature behavior for this plug, so that support remains limited here rather than promised.
Thread makes the value comparison difficult
IKEA TOFSMYGGA was $19.99 in the United States on October 1, 2026. It also has two separately controlled outlets and adds energy tracking, but it uses Matter over Thread. When Thread already reaches the outdoor socket, IKEA offers more at half the price. Cync makes more sense when using the existing Wi-Fi network avoids new infrastructure.
Kasa EP40M is the closer Wi-Fi alternative, with the same basic two-outlet job. Its documentation conflicts about the lower operating temperature, making Cync the more defensible winter purchase. Leviton D215O goes the other direction: one outlet for $59.99, but with an ambient-light sensor and an optional wall control that can justify the premium for year-round patio lighting.
Buy Cync when the cold-weather rating, two loads and Wi-Fi route solve the actual installation. Buy IKEA when Thread coverage is already there. Keep an ordinary outdoor timer if neither app choice adds anything useful.
