What we like
- Optional battery wall switch pairs directly with the plug
- Two plugs fit a standard duplex receptacle
- Stores Leviton schedules on the plug
What could be better
- Wall control more than doubles the plug's purchase price
- On/off only, with no lamp dimming
- Matter upgrade removes an older unit's HomeKit pairing
Pay for the switch by the door
Leviton's D215P is a sensible choice for a floor lamp tucked behind a sofa when the room needs a switch by the entrance. Pair it with the battery-powered DAWSC Anywhere Switch Companion and anyone can turn the lamp on without finding a phone or reaching behind the furniture. The companion mounts on the wall without new wiring and pairs directly with the plug.
That convenience needs to be worth $51.98 to you. The US D215P-1RW offer costs $24.99 and the companion adds $26.99, with its wallplate, delivery and tax still extra. For simple app control, a timer or a voice command, we would buy the Tapo P125M. Its current $11.99 single-unit sale price saves $13 on the plug alone. Both switch an ordinary lamp; Leviton's reason to spend more is the optional physical control where you need it.
Useful around furniture, limited to switching
Leviton's shape leaves room for a second D215P in a standard duplex receptacle. A button on its side provides local control, while up to three paired companions can add switches around a room. Leviton specifies a nominal 50-foot range for the companion; walls and placement still matter. Matterhome has not tested its radio reach or switching reliability.
The plug also stores its My Leviton schedules locally. Leviton says they continue during a temporary internet outage, a useful detail for a lamp that should come on at the same time each evening. Those schedules and the companion are Leviton features, so do not assume another Matter app provides their settings.
D215P cannot dim the lamp. If the problem is harsh light while watching television, a dimmer and compatible bulbs are the better purchase. Leave the lamp's own switch on, and use a continuously powered indoor outlet. This is a 120 V US purchase, not a plug to move between regional socket systems.
The 15 A general-use rating is not permission to connect any appliance. LED, CFL and electronic-ballast loads have a separate 5 A limit; incandescent and halogen lighting are limited to 1,500 W. Leviton excludes high-power heating appliances such as portable heaters, along with electronic low-voltage transformers and HID lamps. A room lamp within the appropriate rating is a much clearer use than automating a heater.
Keep an older D215P, but plan the Apple migration
D215P uses Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi through a compatible Matter controller, without a Leviton hub or Thread border router. It provides on/off control in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. Budget for a firmware update before first Matter pairing: older HomeKit stock needs one.
The available upgrade runs through a My Leviton account and the app's Matter Early Access Program. Once the Matter firmware is installed, its pairing code is available in Device Settings.
Updating removes the old Apple HomeKit connection and requires adding the plug to Apple Home again with its Matter code. If the lamp already works the way you want in HomeKit, there is little reason to disrupt it just for a different badge. Keep the hardware; take the upgrade when sharing it with another Matter system solves an actual problem.
