Buy it when the router upgrade is part of the plan

Nest Wifi Pro is useful because Google lists it as both a Google Home Matter hub and a Thread border router. If the home already needs a Wi-Fi 6E router or mesh upgrade, it can solve the Matter infrastructure job at the same time.

That is the right reason to choose it. A router is a bigger purchase than a small smart display or speaker, so it should be justified by the network, not only by the Thread logo.

What it fixes

Matter-over-Thread devices need a Thread border router, and Matter also depends on healthy local networking. Nest Wifi Pro keeps those concerns in the Google Home setup path for households that already want Google to manage the network.

That can be cleaner than buying a separate hub for Thread while the router remains an older weak point.

Setup path

Set up the router through Google Home, place the mesh around Wi-Fi performance first, and confirm IPv6 is enabled. Google's Matter setup documentation calls out IPv6 as part of reliable Matter behavior.

After the network is stable, add Matter devices from Google Home and keep each manufacturer's app available for firmware updates and device-specific settings.

Where it is the wrong buy

Skip Nest Wifi Pro if your existing network is already good and you only need Thread coverage. Nest Hub second generation or Google TV Streamer 4K may be a simpler buy.

Also skip it if another ecosystem owns the home. A Google router can still be a router, but the Matter controller and Thread path described here are Google Home features.
