A smart plug can report that an outlet is on without proving the appliance is doing anything. ThirdReality Smart Plug M1 adds power readings to that basic switch job for $12.99, which makes it a useful low-cost test for a lamp, fan, dehumidifier, charger, or other plug-in load. The important qualifier is where those readings appear.
ThirdReality specifically documents power metering and energy statistics in SmartThings and Home Assistant. Its product page also lists Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa, but it does not promise the same energy view in those platforms. The M1 is therefore easiest to recommend to SmartThings and Home Assistant households. Everyone else should assume basic Matter switching first and treat metering as something to verify.
The meter is the reason to choose M1
The North American M1 hardware is model 3RSP03046W. ThirdReality rates it for 100 to 120 V AC, 15 A maximum, 50 or 60 Hz, and 1800 W maximum. The body measures 2.7 x 1.5 x 1.13 inches and has a side button plus a red status LED. The current store separates that hardware identity from the pack SKU: P1SPMB1 is the available $12.99 single pack, while the four-pack costs $38.99.
In SmartThings, the manufacturer shows ordinary outlet control, a live power reading, timers, and routines. Its manual names SmartThings Hub 2018, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, and SmartThings Station as compatible Matter controllers. Home Assistant has its own manual section for commissioning through the Matter integration, and ThirdReality lists power metering and energy statistics there as well.
That platform specificity is useful. Power data has often been the least portable part of a Matter plug, so a row of ecosystem logos is not enough evidence for a power-aware automation. If the plan is to detect when a washing machine stops or to chart a dehumidifier's consumption, confirm that the chosen platform creates the required entities and retains the history before buying four plugs.
Matter setup does not need another hub
M1 uses Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It does not need a Thread border router, a ThirdReality bridge, or a Zigbee coordinator. A compatible Matter controller is still required, and the phone, controller, and plug need a normal home-network path during commissioning.
Scan the Matter code on the product or in the manual from the receiving ecosystem. The LED flashes red during pairing and turns off after pairing completes. To start over, hold the side button until that red light flashes rapidly, then commission the plug again. SmartThings users can also create a new Matter sharing code after setup when another ecosystem needs access.
ThirdReality lists Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant for the product, but its current manual only walks through SmartThings and Home Assistant. Apple, Google, and Alexa buyers should confirm that their exact hub, speaker, or display acts as the required Matter controller. They should also test the energy view rather than infer it from on-off support.
Check the appliance before the rating label
A 15 A maximum does not make every 15 A appliance a good smart-plug load. Space heaters, portable air conditioners, pumps, compressors, and motor loads may require a direct wall connection, a dedicated circuit, or switching hardware designed for their startup current and duty cycle. The appliance manual and local electrical rules decide that fit.
For ordinary approved loads, pair and update the plug while its button and Matter label are easy to reach. ThirdReality provides firmware through its 3R-Installer app without requiring a brand hub. The current release history lists version 1.00.62, dated July 17, 2025, and warns that moving from the previous version requires resetting the network configuration. That is a reason to update before building routines, not after the plug is hidden behind furniture.
Matterhome has not tested metering accuracy, sustained-load temperature, Wi-Fi range, firmware behavior, or feature parity. A serious power-triggered automation should be checked against a known load and observed through several normal cycles before it is trusted.
Buy one, prove the data, then scale
At $12.99, the single M1 is the sensible purchase. Add it to the platform that will own the automation, confirm the live watts and accumulated energy fields, and verify that those values recover after a power or network interruption. The four-pack only becomes the better deal after that test passes.
Kasa KP125M and Tapo P110M solve the same direct-Wi-Fi metering job with more established brand apps. Eve Energy costs more and needs Thread infrastructure, but it can also act as a powered Thread router. Choose M1 when a cheap, direct Matter meter for SmartThings or Home Assistant is the point. Choose another plug when the network role or vendor app matters more than the price.
