A metering wall switch
Tapo S515 adds energy monitoring to a direct-Matter Wi-Fi wall switch. That is useful if you want to understand how much a lighting circuit uses or confirm that an attached load is actually drawing power.
The important caveat is portability. TP-Link says energy monitoring is not supported by most Matter-enabled apps yet, so the Tapo app should remain part of the setup.
Setup path
Verify neutral wiring and load compatibility, then install the switch and connect it to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Use Matter for cross-platform on/off control and Tapo for firmware and power details.
If energy is the buying reason, test one switch with your ecosystem before replacing several.
What to check
S515 is not a dimmer. It is a stronger version of a basic switch for buyers who care about power readings, but only if they are comfortable keeping Tapo in the loop for those readings.
Best for
- Neutral-wired lighting circuits where power use is useful
- Tapo users who want Matter sharing from a wall switch
- Rooms where on/off wall control matters more than dimming
Skip if
- You need dimming
- You need energy readings inside a specific Matter platform and have not tested it
- The wall box lacks a neutral wire
