Tapo S515D KIT

S515D KIT is an appealing way to dim one lighting circuit from both ends of a hall or room. The $44.99 kit includes both required controls, with useful physical brightness buttons on each. Its narrow three-way design is the catch: the units cannot work independently or extend to a four-way circuit.

What we like

  • Brightness and on/off control at both wall locations
  • One kit includes the main dimmer, satellite and two wallplates
  • Tapo energy tracking and adjustable fades add useful extras

What could be better

  • The two units control one circuit and must stay together
  • Cannot retain a traditional companion or support four-way wiring
  • Needs the correct neutral-wired main location and suitable dimmable lamps

Dimming at both ends is worth having

S515D KIT is more interesting than a pair of ordinary smart switches because both wall positions can adjust brightness. You can lower the hallway lights from upstairs or downstairs, or change a room's lighting from either entrance. The main and satellite each have on/off and brightness buttons, so neither location is reduced to a basic secondary switch.

At the checked $44.99 Tapo store price, the kit contains both required dimmers and two wallplates. A separate two-kit offer is $67.98 for two suitable circuits. The distinction matters: two physical units in the ordinary kit are not two independent smart dimmers.

The pair is both the benefit and the restriction

The main and satellite must operate together on one supported three-way circuit. Neither works independently or with a traditional three-way companion, and the kit does not support four-way wiring. A staircase controlled from three wall locations needs a different solution, even though the simpler S515 supports an on/off four-way arrangement.

For one wall location, S505D is the more economical dimming choice. Its $24.99 two-pack serves two separate single-pole circuits; it cannot substitute for this matched kit. If you only want on/off control from multiple positions, one S515 at $15.99 can retain the appropriate ordinary companions and is substantially cheaper.

Useful light control comes before energy graphs

Fades and brightness adjustment make this kit useful in a room that needs different light levels through the evening. It keeps ordinary dimmable lamps, but all lamps on the circuit share the setting. The electrical limits are 150 W of compatible LED lighting or 300 W incandescent/halogen, using leading-edge TRIAC dimming. Smart bulbs are unsuitable.

The main location needs neutral wiring, and the two boxes have different roles. Budget for a qualified electrician to confirm the arrangement and install the pair. The low price is attractive only if the circuit and lamps suit it; a cheap kit with the wrong dimming method will not produce good lighting.

Tapo's energy graphs are a useful secondary feature, but current model guidance does not promise equivalent reporting throughout Matter apps. We would buy S515D KIT for the convenience of dimming from either wall location. For that specific job it is good value; outside it, the matched pair quickly becomes a constraint.

S515 is a particularly good-value choice for lights controlled from several wall locations. One $15.99 switch can work with the remaining ordinary switches, and energy monitoring adds a useful extra. It is also worth the small premium over S505 for many single-pole lighting jobs, provided you do not need dimming.

S505D is a strong-value dimmer for ordinary lights you want to keep. The checked $24.99 two-pack is especially attractive, and physical brightness buttons make it useful without a phone. Its single-pole wiring and specific bulb requirements are the main limits; buy it for the lighting result, not the longest feature list.
