The receiver is behind the thermostat

Wireless Receiver X is easy to misread as a normal hub. It is really the boiler-side device for Tado's wireless thermostat path. It wires into the heating system, connects wirelessly to the Tado X room controls, and Tado says it functions as a Thread border router.

That role matters, but it does not make the receiver the thing a person adjusts from the sofa. For most homes, the product to buy first is the Wireless Smart Thermostat X Starter Kit.

Where it fits

Use a separate receiver when a Tado X setup needs additional boiler-side hardware for a compatible multi-zone system. Tado describes it as an addition to Tado setups and also includes it in the wireless starter kit.

The compatibility check is non-negotiable. Relay and OpenTherm support are useful only when the boiler or heat pump and wiring match.

What Matter means here

Tado lists the receiver as part of the X line that supports Matter and Thread, and the receiver can provide the Thread border router role. The ecosystem-facing experience still comes from the finished Tado thermostat setup.

That means Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant may see useful thermostat controls, but the receiver itself should not be treated like a universal smart home hub.

Should you buy it?

Buy it separately only for a Tado X design that clearly needs another receiver. Skip it as a first purchase, and use the wireless starter kit when the home needs a boiler receiver and room thermostat together.
