Tado Wireless Receiver X (EU, TR04)

A useful spare, an expensive starting point

The separate Wireless Receiver X is a sensible purchase for an existing Tado X system that needs replacement boiler-side hardware or an additional supported zone. It is less attractive as the first item in a new heating basket. You still need the appropriate room controller, and Tado sells those parts together in starter kits.

On September 10, 2026, the German store listed this EU receiver at €129.99 but marked it sold out. The first-generation room sensor was another €79.99, making €209.98 for the two separately before shipping or installation. The newer complete wireless kit was listed at €199.99 with a redesigned rechargeable sensor. A standalone receiver should solve a specific missing-part problem, not be the default route to a complete thermostat.

The useful part is what it lets you move

The receiver stays near the heating equipment, connected to its control wiring and mains power. The wireless room controller can sit where people spend time instead of wherever the old thermostat cable ends. That separation is worthwhile when a drafty hallway or an awkward wall gives a poor impression of the room's temperature.

It also provides the Thread border router for the Tado X room devices. A separate Bridge X is not automatically required. The receiver uses Wi-Fi for its network connection, so its boiler-side position still needs useful reception; the fact that the room sensor is wireless does not remove that constraint.

First- and second-generation X room controllers can work with it. A working receiver does not need replacing merely because you want the newer sensor's light ring and rechargeable battery.

Choose the actual regional hardware

This page covers the European TR04 receiver shown in the product image. It has a single heating-control button. The UK PR04 is a different version, with separate heating and hot-water controls intended to support the relevant British system-boiler arrangements. The regional label is more than a choice of currency or plug.

Relay and OpenTherm support still need to match the exact boiler, wiring and zone arrangement. Adding another receiver cannot create independently controlled zones where the heating system has no means to separate them. Likewise, it is not a replacement for an unsupported V3+ receiver within the same Tado Home.

Do not buy it as a universal Matter relay

The receiver has no Matter pairing code and does not appear as an independently controllable heating relay in third-party home apps. A Tado X room controller provides the Matter thermostat controls; the receiver performs the boiler-side job behind that system. Its Thread function does not turn it into a general smart-home controller.

For a first purchase, compare a complete wireless kit and its current availability. The first-generation kit was listed at €149.99 but also sold out; the second-generation EU kit is the more useful current price comparison. Keep an installed receiver that works, and buy this separate part only when the rest of the installation makes it the economical choice.
