Sonos Play

Play is the most balanced Sonos portable for moving between a regular home listening spot and the patio. Its $299 price buys a charging base, longer advertised endurance than Roam 2 and a replaceable battery. Budget for the missing power adapter, and choose the smaller Roam if carrying weight matters more than those conveniences.

What we like

  • Charging base makes returning it to a home listening spot convenient
  • Up-to-24-hour battery estimate and a replaceable battery
  • Can share outdoor music or serve as portable TV rears with supported Sonos hardware

What could be better

  • Required USB-PD wall adapter is missing from the box
  • At 1.3 kg, it is a substantial step up from Roam 2 for travel
  • Two-speaker features add cost and have specific grouping and soundbar limits

A portable with a sensible place to come home to

Sonos Play is appealing when the speaker spends most days in one room but regularly follows you elsewhere. The included charging base lets it live on a kitchen counter, ready to be lifted off for dinner outside. That routine is more useful than a portable speaker that spends its home life lying beside an unplugged cable.

At the US Sonos store on September 11, 2026, the black model was available to order for $299 with free shipping before sales tax. It occupies a sensible position between the pocket-friendlier Roam 2 and the heavy Move 2. The catch is that the base is included but the wall adapter is not.

Budget for the charging routine

Play requires a suitable USB-C Power Delivery adapter of at least 18 W; Sonos recommends 45 W. An existing compatible supply can work, while Sonos's $29 adapter brings the speaker-and-adapter total to $328 before tax. A spare low-power USB plug should not be assumed sufficient just because a cable can be attached to it.

The base belongs indoors and must stay dry. Play's IP67 protection is useful for a speaker that leaves the kitchen for a patio, but the charging setup is not a permanent outdoor installation. Put the base where you will actually return the speaker after use.

Sonos estimates up to 24 hours of playback. That is a more comfortable planning figure than Roam 2's ten hours, although volume and use change the result. Play can top up a phone over USB-C, spending some of that same battery reserve. I would treat phone charging as a helpful fallback rather than assume both devices will last indefinitely.

The battery is replaceable. Sonos listed the replacement kit at $69, on backorder with an estimated September 14 shipment when checked. Having a defined replacement part is a worthwhile ownership advantage; it is not a guarantee that parts will always be in stock years from now.

Easier to move than Move, heavier than Roam

The 1.3 kg speaker has a carry strap and physical playback buttons. It is manageable between rooms or from a car to a table, but noticeably heavier than the 430 g Roam 2 in a bag. Its two angled tweeters and midwoofer provide stereo playback from one body; that does not replace the physical separation of two speakers across a room.

Direct Bluetooth works before Wi-Fi setup. Adding it to Sonos at home brings multiroom listening and AirPlay, while automatic Trueplay can adapt to a new position with the microphones enabled. Optional analog line-in costs another $19 for the adapter, plus the audio cable. These features make sense if Play will alternate between being a room speaker and an outdoor companion.

Sharing music outdoors has limits

Up to four Play and Move 2 speakers can share synchronized Bluetooth audio away from Wi-Fi, but they must first belong to the same Sonos household. Roam 2 is not included. This is useful for your own speakers on a trip, rather than a promise that any visiting friend's Sonos will join instantly.

The app has limited functions during offline grouping, and speakers must be ungrouped before rejoining the home Wi-Fi system. That extra transition is worth knowing if the attraction is moving a small music system outside for an evening.

The new TV role is useful if the speakers return

Portable surrounds began rolling out with Sonos 27 on September 8, 2026. Two matching Plays can act as rears with supported soundbars such as Beam Gen 2 or Arc Ultra, with the soundbar microphone enabled and suitable placement in the same room. Sonos listed the Play pair at $568 before tax and any missing adapters.

Taking one away stops surround playback for both. Their individual Bluetooth, AirPlay and line-in inputs are unavailable while acting as rears. This is a clever way to reuse two speakers you want for music, but dedicated rears are a better fit when somebody regularly carries one away while another person watches TV.

Choose Roam 2 for minimal bag weight or Move 2 only if its larger format earns the extra $200. For most trips between a home listening spot and nearby outdoor use, Play's price and manageable size make the stronger case. Keep an existing portable that already handles that routine well.

Roam 2

Small travel speaker with Bluetooth and home Wi-Fi audio / Speakers

Wi-Fi

Roam 2 is the Sonos portable to choose when the speaker has to earn its place in a small bag. Its 430 g weight and direct Bluetooth playback are more convincing than its short battery estimate. At $179, it makes most sense if you will also use Sonos at home; longer outdoor sessions favor a larger speaker.

Move 2

Move 2 is worth considering as a substantial Sonos room speaker that occasionally goes outside. At $499 and 3 kg, it is difficult to recommend for travel or over Play on battery life alone. Buy it after deciding the larger speaker is worth carrying; existing owners should explore its new software features before replacing it.
