Sonos Roam 2

Sonos Roam 2 is the small Sonos speaker for outside, travel, and wet-room moments when portability matters more than room-filling sound. It is a better backyard or bag speaker than a fixed smart speaker, but Sonos Play is the stronger choice when battery life and bigger sound matter.

Buy it for the small outside job

Sonos Roam 2 is the compact Sonos answer for patios, parks, bathrooms, beach bags, and travel. Sonos lists IP67 water and dust protection, drop resistance, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, voice support, Automatic Trueplay, and up to 10 hours of battery life.

That mix makes Roam 2 different from a normal Bluetooth speaker. Away from home, it can pair directly to a phone. Back on Wi-Fi, it can behave like a small Sonos room speaker with AirPlay 2 and Sonos system control. It is still not a Matter accessory, controller, or Thread border router.

Where it fits

Use Roam 2 when the speaker needs to be small enough to grab without thinking. It fits the backyard table, bathroom shelf, suitcase, picnic blanket, or park bag better than a fixed smart speaker.

The tradeoff is scale. Roam 2 is easier to carry than Sonos Play, but the smaller body and shorter battery make it less convincing for a larger patio or a long outdoor day.

Setup path

Use Bluetooth first when the job is simple phone audio away from home. Set it up in the Sonos app on Wi-Fi when you want it to join Sonos rooms, use AirPlay 2, support voice features where available, or move between home and travel without treating it as a disposable Bluetooth speaker.

If Home Assistant is the control layer, test the behavior you want while Roam 2 is actually on the home network. Portable speakers spend part of their life away from the automations that can see them.

Where it is the wrong buy

Skip Roam 2 if the outside space needs louder sound, longer battery life, or a speaker that can anchor a patio for hours. Sonos Play is the better Sonos option for that bigger portable job.

Also skip it if the only requirement is rugged Bluetooth. JBL Charge 6 is simpler, lasts longer, and does not ask you to care about the Sonos system.

Best for

  • Sonos homes that want a small speaker for the patio, park, beach, bathroom, or travel bag
  • Apple users who want AirPlay 2 when the speaker is back on Wi-Fi
  • Buyers who want one compact speaker that can switch between Bluetooth and a Sonos home system

Skip if

  • You want a Matter controller or Thread border router
  • The outside space needs louder, longer-lasting audio than a compact speaker can provide
  • A cheaper Bluetooth-only speaker is enough
