The premium portable Sonos speaker
Move 2 is the Sonos portable to buy when the speaker still needs to sound like a serious room speaker. Sonos lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, Automatic Trueplay, voice support, line-in through an adapter, up to 24 hours of battery life, and IP56 protection.
That mix puts it above Roam 2 and Play in the portable Sonos ladder. It is the stronger kitchen-to-patio speaker, not the smallest travel speaker.
Where it fits
Use Move 2 when one speaker should live in a kitchen, living room, or office most of the week, then move outside for dinner or into a larger temporary room. The handle and charging base make that routine realistic.
The size is part of the decision. Move 2 is portable around the home, but it is not something most people will casually throw into a small bag.
Setup path
Start in the Sonos app on Wi-Fi. That is where the speaker joins the Sonos system, receives updates, gets tuned, adds services, and handles voice settings.
Use AirPlay 2 from Apple devices when the speaker is home on Wi-Fi. Use Bluetooth when the speaker is away from the network. If the speaker will be part of Home Assistant automations, test what happens when it leaves and returns to the network.
Where it is the wrong buy
Skip Move 2 if the room only needs a small outside speaker. Roam 2 is easier to carry, and Play is the less expensive Sonos portable with a long battery.
Also skip it for rugged Bluetooth-only use. JBL Charge 6 is simpler, cheaper, and more water-focused when Sonos does not matter.
Best for
- Sonos homes that want a powerful portable speaker for kitchens, patios, and larger rooms
- Apple users who want AirPlay 2 when the speaker is on Wi-Fi
- Buyers who want one speaker to behave like a fixed room speaker most days and a portable speaker when needed
Skip if
- You want the smallest travel speaker
- The speaker will live near heavy water exposure where IP67 or IP68 is the better target
- You need a Matter controller or Thread border router
