Sonos Era 100

Sonos Era 100 is the default Sonos pick for a fixed room where music quality matters more than having a Matter hub in the speaker. It is a better kitchen, office, or bedroom speaker than a tiny assistant puck, but it is not the right answer for TV audio or Thread coverage.

The fixed-room Sonos baseline

Era 100 is the Sonos speaker to consider when a room deserves better audio but does not need a soundbar. It suits a kitchen counter, office shelf, bedroom dresser, or small living room where the goal is music, radio, podcasts, and voice control through supported paths.

The important caveat is that this is a speaker, not Matter infrastructure. Sonos lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, and optional line-in support. Matter pairing is not the setup path.

Where it fits

Pick Era 100 for rooms where the speaker will stay put. Compared with a small ecosystem speaker, it is a more audio-first choice. Compared with a soundbar, it is simpler and better suited to music than TV dialogue.

It is especially useful when the house already uses Sonos. One Era 100 can be the room that starts a system, or it can fill the kitchen or office while the TV room uses a soundbar.

Setup path

Use the Sonos app first. That is where the speaker joins Wi-Fi, receives updates, gets tuned, and joins rooms or groups. After that, add the control path that matches the household: AirPlay 2 for Apple devices, Alexa where supported, or Home Assistant media control if that is the automation layer.

Do not assume it replaces a HomePod or Google speaker for smart-home hub duties. If the room also needs Thread or Matter controller coverage, use a speaker that actually provides that infrastructure.

Where it is the wrong buy

Skip Era 100 for a TV-first room. It can play audio, but it is not the clean answer for HDMI eARC, TV remotes, dialogue processing, and surround expansion. Use a soundbar for that job.

Also skip it if you mainly want a portable bathroom or patio speaker. Era 100 is a powered room speaker. Sonos Play or JBL Charge 6 fits that moving, wet-room job better.

Best for

  • Kitchens, offices, bedrooms, and small living rooms where one good speaker is enough
  • Sonos homes expanding room by room
  • Apple users who want AirPlay 2 and Alexa users who want a Sonos speaker with supported voice control

Skip if

  • You need a Matter controller or Thread border router
  • You want Google Assistant built into the speaker
  • The room is a TV-first home theater space
