ThirdReality Smart Switch MT1 (P1TSSA1)

A wall toggle beside a gas fireplace or an awkward older light can be a bad candidate for a normal smart switch. ThirdReality Smart Switch MT1 avoids the electrical box. It fastens to the existing faceplate and uses a battery-powered mechanism to move the original toggle or rocker, while its front button preserves local control.

That is a useful $34.99 retrofit when the circuit should remain untouched. It is also a mechanical product before it is a Matter product. The shape and travel of the switch, the two faceplate screws, and the gap between the actuator and wall decide whether it will work.

It moves the old switch instead of replacing it

The kit includes the MT1, two AAA batteries, two fasteners, three spacer thicknesses, screws, and protective films for rocker switches. Installation starts by removing the two faceplate screws, fitting ThirdReality's fasteners in their place, and choosing spacers that put the actuator at the correct distance from the switch.

ThirdReality's manual gives rocker-height bands for that choice. A rocker sitting between 0.5 mm below and 1 mm above the faceplate needs no spacer. Heights from 1 to 2.5 mm use the thin spacer, while 2.5 to 4 mm use the thick spacer. The fasteners and body then click together, so the actuator can be removed again without changing the wiring.

The product page lists 12 V, 24 V, 110 V, and 220 V switches because MT1 is not connected to the electrical load. It only pushes the existing control. That makes a low-voltage fireplace switch a plausible use, but it does not override the appliance maker's safety rules or make every faceplate mechanically compatible.

The Thread setup is unusually well documented

Smart Switch MT1 is a direct Matter-over-Thread accessory. It needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router, but no ThirdReality hub. Hold its button for at least 20 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then scan the Matter QR code or enter the manual code in the ecosystem app.

The official manual walks through Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant, including multi-admin sharing from the first platform. Each path provides ordinary on-off control and an automation route. ThirdReality also lists Alexa on the product page, but the manual does not include an Alexa section, so Alexa buyers should confirm that their exact Echo provides the required Matter controller and Thread border-router roles before ordering.

This is one switch endpoint, not an energy monitor. ThirdReality describes scheduling and energy-saving routines, but its product materials do not document wattage, consumption, or another metering capability. Buy it to move a switch on command, not to measure what the connected appliance uses.

Physical fit is the real failure mode

ThirdReality's troubleshooting page is more revealing than the platform logos. If the gap is too wide, MT1 can move without completing the switch travel. If it is too tight, the actuator can bind or pull away from the wall. Tightening the faceplate screws slightly or changing the spacer is part of setup, and several local and app-controlled cycles should succeed before any routine depends on it.

The existing switch and the MT1 actuator should both point up during installation. If the resulting on-off state is reversed, the manual says to hold the button for more than 10 seconds until the blue LED stays solid, then release it to reverse direction. Holding for more than 20 seconds instead enters factory-reset and pairing mode, so those two long-press actions should not be treated as interchangeable.

ThirdReality claims about one year of typical use from the two AAA batteries. Matterhome has not tested battery life, mounting stability, actuator force, Thread range, or ecosystem behavior. A frequently used or stiff switch may produce a different result.

Buy it for the switch that should stay put

The manufacturer currently marks SKU P1TSSA1 available at $34.99 and lists small-item shipping across North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom, with final availability and charges decided at checkout. The device was announced in 2025, and ThirdReality's current release history lists firmware version 1.00.15 dated June 25, 2025.

Choose MT1 when avoiding rewiring is the point and the supplied hardware matches the faceplate. Aqara Light Switch H2 US and Eve Dimmer Switch are cleaner in-wall alternatives when the wiring, load, region, and professional installation path are already settled. If the actuator cannot complete five or ten clean cycles during setup, change the fit or return it rather than trying to automate around a mechanical miss.
