Pay for a taller lantern, not more brightness

The 77 cm Lucca makes a stronger visual statement than the 40 cm pedestal. Its glowing head stands above low planting, so it can mark an entrance or remain visible where the shorter light would be swallowed by a border. That is a practical reason to choose the taller housing. Completing a matching set is a weaker one.

Both versions include a replaceable 1,100-lumen A60 E27 color bulb. The extra height does not bring a higher stated output, a different color system or a more capable smart-home connection. It changes the position of the light and the amount of dark metal you see in the garden during the day.

Philips Hue Germany listed this color post, 8721103118752, at €164.99 on September 10, 2026, with only a few left and free delivery. The shorter pedestal was €134.99. Those are displayed prices before the separate Glow-Up promotion advertising up to 25% off. Two tall posts reach €329.98 before any promotional reduction or installation work.

Height can help, or become the problem

A higher diffuser is useful beside low shrubs and around an entrance you want to mark from a distance. Lucca spreads light broadly through its banded head, giving it the character of a lantern. It is not a focused spotlight designed to pick out a single step or throw a narrow beam down a drive.

That same visible glow deserves care near outdoor seating and neighbouring windows. A taller lantern may be more noticeable than you want when sitting nearby. Dimming and a comfortable white setting are often more useful than maximum output, while color is an optional way to change the mood for an evening outdoors.

The housing is 770 mm tall and 142 mm across, with a stated weight of about 2.2 kg. It needs a secure position that does not intrude into the route of a car, gate or mower. Its extra height makes placement a more deliberate choice than scattering small solar lights through a bed.

The cable route matters more than the app

Lucca requires a permanent 220–240V supply and appropriate mounting. It is not part of Hue's plug-together Low-volt range. If you already have suitable mains points at an entrance, the post is a plausible replacement. If the garden is finished and has no power near the intended positions, the electrical work can outweigh the €30 difference between heights.

The aluminium enclosure is rated IP44 for splash protection. That is not a promise of resistance to standing water, pressure washing or every exposed site. We have not tested long-term corrosion, outdoor radio range or illumination across a driveway. Choose a location and installation appropriate to the fixture rather than using its outdoor name as a blanket guarantee.

Hue documents control through a Bridge or Bridge Pro, with Matter sharing the supported light controls to another system. The fuller Hue scenes remain within Hue. The exact fixture listing does not establish direct Matter commissioning for its included bulb, so this should be bought as an addition to a Hue installation rather than assumed to remove the hub requirement.

The shorter pedestal is often enough

Choose the 40 cm Lucca pedestal for a low patio border where the tall post would dominate the view. Choose this 77 cm version when the added height solves a real visibility or planting problem. For a garden you expect to rearrange, investigate a low-voltage system before committing to either fixed mains model.

Country availability also matters. The UK manufacturer page still said the item was no longer available during this check, so the German offer should not be read as a current UK purchase option.

Finally, keep a sound existing Lucca housing in mind. Its replaceable-bulb format means an appropriate light-source change may be enough when your only complaint is the older bulb. Buy the complete post when you need the fixture and its height as well as the light; there is little value in replacing good metalwork purely to acquire a newer connection label.
