IKEA KAJPLATS Smart Bulbs

KAJPLATS is the clearest IKEA Matter lighting line: inexpensive bulbs that use Matter over Thread instead of the older Zigbee-only path. They are attractive for a Thread home, but the exact base, brightness, color support, and remote bundle matter more than the KAJPLATS name alone.

Thread is the upgrade

KAJPLATS is IKEA's direct Matter bulb line. Unlike older Tradfri bulbs that depended on IKEA's Zigbee route, KAJPLATS uses Matter over Thread. That means the bulb can join a compatible Matter ecosystem without DIRIGERA, as long as the home already has a Thread border router.

That is the main reason to buy it. The bulbs are inexpensive, but the setup is not just "buy a cheap bulb and scan it." You need the right Thread hardware, and you need to pick the correct base and brightness before the price comparison means anything.

The catalog is a family, not one bulb

IKEA lists Matter-compatible KAJPLATS bulbs in E26, E12, and GU10 versions, with white spectrum and color plus white spectrum options. The current US catalog also includes starter kits that bundle a bulb with a BILRESA remote.

Do not treat those kits as separate lighting platforms. They are useful when you want a physical remote in the same room. If you already use Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant automations, the standalone bulb may be the cleaner buy.

Setup path

For direct Matter, pair the bulb with a Matter controller that has Thread border router support. DIRIGERA is one route, but not the only one. Apple TV and HomePod models, supported Google devices, compatible Echo or eero hardware, SmartThings hubs, and Home Assistant Thread setups can also fill that role when properly configured.

IKEA's app still matters if you want IKEA-specific grouping, firmware, or remote pairing help. Start with one bulb before filling a room, especially if color accuracy or ecosystem-specific lighting behavior matters.

Should you buy it?

Buy KAJPLATS if you want IKEA-priced bulbs in a Thread-based Matter home. Skip it if you have no Thread border router, want the lowest-friction first smart bulb, or need a particular ecosystem feature that IKEA and your platform have not clearly confirmed for the exact bulb.

Best for

  • Buyers replacing basic bulbs in an existing Thread home
  • Rooms where low-cost Matter lights matter more than premium lighting features
  • IKEA setups that also use BILRESA remotes or DIRIGERA

Skip if

  • You do not have a Matter controller with Thread border router support
  • You need platform-specific features like adaptive lighting confirmed before purchase
  • You want one bulb SKU without checking base, lumen output, and white or color support
