The fingerprint reader is in the right place

U300 puts its fingerprint reader on the lever, so the hand reaching for the door is already near the reader. That is a more convincing convenience feature for a workshop or garage entry than adding another app shortcut. Apple home key and PIN access give the household other choices, and two mechanical keys are included.

The appeal depends on how often this particular door needs controlled access. An office containing equipment or a side entrance used several times a day can justify easier entry. A cupboard that is normally left unlocked gets little benefit from a $229.99 handle.

We have not tested the feel of the lever, fingerprint recognition or long-term latch reliability. Aqara's speed and accuracy figures should not be treated as our measurements.

It replaces a lever and latch

This is a lockset for a compatible single-bore door, replacing the existing lever or knob and its latch. It is not a motor that turns a separate deadbolt. On a door with both a handle and a deadbolt, automating the handle does not automate that second lock.

Aqara specifies a 2⅛-inch (54 mm) main bore, a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch (60 or 70 mm) backset and a 35–55 mm door thickness. The lever can be reversed for the door's handing. Existing holes and trim still need to suit the mounting plates; a new or incompatible door may require cutting or drilling.

The two panels are substantial: the outside is 140 × 76 mm before accounting for the projecting lever. On a small interior door, that can look and feel like more hardware than the job needs. Black and silver finishes offer a choice, but neither hides the touchscreen or fingerprint reader.

Passage Mode suits a busy doorway—with a catch

For a gathering or repeated trips between the house and workshop, Passage Mode keeps the lock from demanding verification on every entry. You enable it at the lock after verifying a fingerprint, code or NFC credential.

Aqara does not allow Passage Mode to be enabled remotely. It can be turned off from the app by locking the device. That distinction matters if your plan is to leave the doorway freely accessible for someone arriving later: it is not simply a remote opening-hours switch.

The indoor lever still provides ordinary exit. However, Aqara's manual says openings using the indoor handle or mechanical key do not generate a status log. The activity history is therefore not a complete record of every person passing through. A household convenience lock and a reliable attendance record are different purchases.

Standard batteries are welcome; weather limits still apply

Four AA batteries are included and replaceable. Aqara estimates up to ten months from ten fingerprint unlock cycles per day. That is a manufacturer test condition, not a life expectancy we have verified.

The USB-C connections provide temporary emergency power. They do not turn the AA cells into a rechargeable pack. The physical keyhole is concealed under the fingerprint-reader cover, keeping it available without leaving it prominent.

The outdoor panel is rated IPX4 and −30°C to 55°C. The inside panel has a narrower −10°C to 55°C operating range. A sheltered garage entry can make sense; exposing both sides to severe outdoor conditions is a different proposition. The exterior rating should not be assigned to the entire assembly.

Pay for easier entry, not an unnecessary extra lock

On September 10, 2026, both US colors were $229.99, with free standard contiguous-US/DC delivery before tax. The lever, latch, strike, mounting hardware, batteries and keys are in the box; NFC cards and any installation work are additional costs.

Matter control requires a suitable controller and Thread border router. You can use Aqara's local Bluetooth settings without a separate Aqara hub, while remote Aqara access management requires its compatible Thread-controller route. Apple home key provides taps, not UWB hands-free entry.

Choose U300 when you repeatedly unlock a compatible lever door and its integrated reader is worth the premium. Keep a sound mechanical lever for a door that seldom needs locked access. If the actual problem is a separate deadbolt, choose hardware for that lock instead of paying to automate the wrong part of the door.
