A better fit can matter more than a newer generation
Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 is an attractive option when the smart control needs to disappear behind an existing switch. At 29 × 34 × 16 mm, it takes a smaller footprint than the full-size 1 Gen4 while retaining a dry-contact output and local automation tools.
The single relay was in stock at €19.90 in Shelly's EU shop on September 9, 2026, including VAT with shipping extra. That is the same price as the full-size model and €6 more than Mini Gen3. Gen4 does not shrink the Mini further, so size alone cannot justify choosing it over the previous generation.
The reason to pay more is the radio choice. Matter is included, with Zigbee available through alternative firmware if a Zigbee coordinator is the better home for the relay. An existing Mini Gen3 can already gain Matter through a firmware update.
Dry contacts, but mains power for the module
The separate relay contacts let the output switch an appropriately matched external circuit. The module itself still needs mains AC and a neutral. A low-voltage output rating should not be mistaken for permission to power the Mini from a low-voltage supply.
Its limits are 8 A AC or 5 A at up to 30 V DC, depending on the circuit and load. The full-size 1 Gen4 offers higher limits and can itself run from stabilized 12 V DC or 24 to 48 V DC. For a project built around a DC supply, the larger relay is a more relevant starting point even though both carry the same Gen4 name.
The Mini provides one on/off output. It does not dim lights, measure energy or provide the coordinated outputs needed by a bidirectional blind motor. Mains installation and checking the load remain electrical work, with a qualified electrician required by the manual. Small dimensions do not remove the need for wire space and suitable circuit protection.
Useful local tools, with a mode tradeoff
In its Wi-Fi role, the relay offers its own browser controls, schedules, automatic timers, MQTT and scripting. Those make it useful for more than a voice-controlled light, while local operation can work without Shelly Cloud.
Switching to Zigbee changes that feature mix. Matter and Zigbee are alternative modes, and native Bluetooth sensor components are unavailable in Zigbee mode. It cannot act as a general bridge bringing nearby Zigbee or Shelly BLU devices into Matter. If a particular sensor-driven routine is the attraction, choose the mode around that routine rather than the number of logos on the box.
Worth the premium for a specific plan
Buy Mini Gen4 when its small footprint and possible Zigbee role both have value. For a simple Matter-controlled circuit, Mini Gen3 costs less with the same physical size and output ratings. There is little reason to replace a working one just for the newer name.
Choose the full-size 1 Gen4 instead when space allows and its higher load limits or DC supply options fit the job. The Mini's advantage is where it fits, rather than how much it can switch.
