A meter for a planned electrical project

Shelly Pro 3EM 120A v2 makes sense when you want to understand a three-phase supply or monitor three suitable circuits from the distribution board. It combines separate current clamps with a narrow DIN rail module, Ethernet and local data storage. Those are practical reasons to choose it over adding several appliance meters around the house.

The current EU package was in stock at €157.90 on September 9, 2026, including VAT and three 120 A clamps. Shelly's US shop listed the v2 at $154.99 before tax. Allow for shipping where applicable and professional installation. An optional fourth clamp for neutral-current measurement is not included.

For a whole-home project, the included clamps make the offer easier to budget. For a one-off question about a single appliance, the installation work and hardware cost are difficult to justify.

Ethernet and local records are the real appeal

A wired network option is useful for a permanent panel installation where relying on Wi-Fi is undesirable. Native local browser access and MQTT let the meter participate in a local monitoring system without requiring Shelly Cloud for that operation.

The current manual specifies at least 45 days of measurements at one-minute resolution, with CSV and JSON export in the product specifications. That gives you a record to examine across days and weeks, instead of relying only on the number visible at the moment you open an app.

The channels can report the three phases of one installation or serve as three separate measurement channels in the appropriate mode. They do not automatically identify every appliance connected downstream. For a solar installation, the ability to measure energy flowing in either direction is useful, but the meter is still one part of understanding generation and consumption, rather than an automatic explanation of the electricity bill.

Three clamps do not make it a three-channel switch

Pro 3EM has no built-in switching relay. Contactor control needs the separate Shelly Pro 3EM Switch Add-on and suitable switching hardware. If the project is to control a large load based on energy readings, budget for that control equipment as well as the meter.

Its 120 A per-channel measurement limit also does not mean it can directly switch 120 A. The module needs space on the DIN rail, and the clamps and wiring need room around the conductors. Mains installation requires a qualified electrician; the product's compact width does not establish that a crowded board can accommodate the full installation.

Make sure the offer is for v2

Shelly marks its original Pro 3EM 120A shop listing discontinued and points buyers to v2. Both current regional v2 shops explicitly offer Matter after a firmware update, with activation through the device interface. The recommendation here covers that v2 offer, not every older Pro 3EM or similarly named certified variant.

Existing owners should check their exact hardware's available firmware before buying a replacement. For a new purchase, the local records and electrical fit matter more than the Matter badge: detailed energy history is not guaranteed to appear identically in every Matter app.

If you only need two channels on the same phase, the EM Gen4 starts at €66.90 with one 50 A clamp and may be the more economical choice, allowing for the extra clamps your project needs. Choose Pro 3EM v2 when its third channel, three-phase role or wired network connection earns the additional cost.
