Replacing a thermostat can fail before pairing if the wall lacks a C-wire or the HVAC system uses proprietary controls. Mysa Smart Thermostat is a $159 low-voltage controller for central heating and cooling, and its direct Matter-over-Wi-Fi path now works through current firmware. The purchase makes sense when the equipment matches and the household is comfortable keeping Mysa for controls that Matter does not carry.
Matterhome has not tested the thermostat or its firmware rollout. This guide is based on Mysa's current product and support documentation plus its Matter certification.
Start behind the old thermostat
Mysa built this model for many standard 24 V systems. Its product page covers furnaces, central air conditioners, hydronic heating, and ducted heat pumps, including several staged and dual-fuel arrangements. It is not the Mysa for electric baseboards, electric in-floor heat, or infrared-controlled mini-splits, and it is not compatible with proprietary heat-pump systems.
The thermostat needs a C-wire for continuous power. Mysa sells a $30 adapter for supported systems without one, but an adapter is not permission to guess at the control board. Check the existing terminals and equipment in Mysa's compatibility tool before ordering. A mixed-transformer boiler and air-conditioning setup, fan-coil equipment, or unusual staging deserves an HVAC professional even if the thermostat itself looks like a simple wall swap.
Mysa ships direct orders only to the United States and Canada. That regional and equipment fit check comes first because Matter cannot correct an unsupported compressor stage or a mistaken configuration code. Mysa warns that some Matter platforms may display a mode the connected equipment cannot run. The thermostat rejects the command, but an automation built around the wrong mode is still a bad comfort plan.
Matter arrived as a firmware path
The exact North American store SKU is ST.1.0.01.NA. Mysa's current support guide requires thermostat firmware 4.5.37 or later and Mysa app 4.11 or later. The Connectivity Standards Alliance separately lists hardware V1-0 with firmware 4.6.52, Matter 1.4.2, and Wi-Fi transport. This is active firmware for a shipping product, not a certification-only promise.
Setup still begins with a Mysa account and app. Connect the thermostat there, update it, open the Home Assistants menu, and retrieve the Matter code for the chosen platform. Mysa says the thermostat, phone, and Matter controller should be on the same home network rather than a guest network. The physical connection is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router or Mysa hub is involved.
Mysa provides exact pairing instructions for Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. SmartThings can commission Wi-Fi Matter devices through a compatible hub, while Home Assistant can add them through its Matter Server path. Mysa does not publish product-specific walkthroughs for those two platforms, so inspect the thermostat entities and build a small test automation before treating either route as equivalent.
Matter carries the controls most households will use every day: current temperature, heating and cooling setpoints, heat, cool, auto and off modes, humidity where the platform displays it, voice commands, scenes, and automations. That is enough to lower the temperature at bedtime or let another ecosystem see whether the house is heating.
It is not a portable copy of Mysa. Auxiliary heat and fan-only mode remain in the Mysa app, although their state can sync to Matter. Mysa also keeps auto-mode deadband adjustment and wider setpoint ranges. Schedules, detailed energy trends, firmware, HVAC configuration, and device maintenance belong there as well.
Configuration changes have a hidden cost. Re-pairing the thermostat in Mysa removes all Matter platform connections. Changing the HVAC configuration code also requires removing and pairing the Matter routes again so the exposed modes match the equipment. Any affected automations then need to be rebuilt.
Price wins only when the feature gap fits
At $159, Mysa lands above the basic Nest Thermostat and well below the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. It includes Mysa scheduling and energy features without a subscription, and its direct Matter path avoids another bridge. That makes it appealing when the household wants ordinary shared temperature control rather than one ecosystem's premium automation layer.
The missing room-sensor path is the clearest reason to pause. Mysa's current product page still says Central HVAC cannot use room sensors. A hallway thermostat can therefore control a compatible system well while still being the wrong choice for a bedroom that runs hot, a sunny office, or a home that needs occupancy-weighted temperature control.
Check the exact terminals and equipment in Mysa's compatibility tool before ordering. If they pass, update the thermostat, pair one platform, and test every installed mode before rebuilding comfort automations. A remote sensor, proprietary HVAC integration, or deeper platform-specific feature is a reason to choose different hardware.
