A smart shutoff cannot rescue a valve that is already stuck behind a cabinet. Aqara Valve Controller T1 is a battery-powered motor that clamps onto an existing lever or butterfly handle, so the first buying decision happens at the pipe: does the valve move freely, match the supported sizes, and leave enough room for the controller to swing?
If those checks pass, the controller can close a main water line from Aqara Home, a local button, or an automation. Its Matter route is indirect. Valve Controller T1 speaks Zigbee to a compatible Aqara hub, and the hub bridges it to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.
Matterhome has not tested the clamp, torque, leak response, or bridge behavior. This guide is based on Aqara's current stores, product documentation, and installation manual.
Measure the valve, not just the pipe
Aqara supports DN15, DN20, and DN25 pipes, commonly described as 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch, with lever or butterfly handles. The controller is not a replacement valve. Its metal bracket grips the pipe while a separate arm turns the existing handle, which means a gate valve, an unusual handle, or a cramped installation can rule it out even when the pipe diameter looks right.
Operate the valve by hand before ordering. It should move from fully open to fully closed without binding, and the surrounding pipe should be sound. Aqara's manual asks for about 187 x 248 mm of working space around DN15 and DN20 installations and 180 x 268 mm for DN25. It also tells the installer to align the controller shaft with the valve pivot and run a test cycle before treating the mounting as complete.
The controller runs on four AA batteries and has a clutch for manual operation. Aqara estimates up to two years from four 2900 mAh cells at one open-close cycle per day, but that is a vendor test condition rather than a guarantee for a stiff valve or cold utility room. A slow cycle, a slipping clamp, or a valve that no longer reaches its stop is a maintenance problem, not something to hide behind an automation.
Matter begins at the Aqara hub
Valve Controller T1 is a Zigbee 3.0 accessory. It must first join Aqara Home through a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub, and Aqara's current stores specifically exclude Camera Hub G2H Pro for this product. There is no direct Thread or Wi-Fi commissioning path for the controller itself, so requiresBrandHub is the important compatibility field.
Once the valve works in Aqara Home, a compatible hub can expose it through Matter. Aqara currently lists Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant for the product. That is enough to build the control path around a household's main app, but Aqara does not publish a separate feature matrix showing the exact valve tile, state reporting, and automation options in each receiving ecosystem.
Test the receiving platform while someone is beside the valve. Confirm that open and close commands move the handle in the expected direction, that the reported state follows the physical valve, and that the control still works after the hub and Matter controller restart. Keep pairing, firmware, battery status, and mechanical checks on the Aqara side even if daily control moves elsewhere.
A leak sensor is the useful pairing
The controller does not detect water on its own. Aqara's leak-response example pairs it with a water leak sensor and the brand hub, then closes the valve when the sensor becomes wet. That can shorten the time water keeps flowing after a detected leak, especially when the shutoff is in a basement or utility closet that nobody visits often.
Build that automation only after testing the controller manually. Wet the sensor according to its instructions, watch the valve complete a full close, and confirm the notification and state change in the app that will actually be used. If the same rule is also built in Apple Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant, duplicate actions can make troubleshooting harder. One tested owner for the shutoff rule is better than several copies whose behavior has drifted.
Valve Controller T1 is for indoor use and Aqara says it does not provide protection against water ingress. Do not mount it where a leaking joint, outdoor rain, irrigation spray, or standing water can soak the motor and battery compartment. The irony of a leak accessory that must stay dry is easy to miss during a quick installation.
Decide how much protection the retrofit should carry
Aqara's current US and European stores list the controller at $69.99 and €69.99, while the UK shop price is about £63 at the time of writing. That is attractive when the valve already fits and an Aqara hub is present. A removable motor can add remote control and a tested leak-sensor response without hiring a plumber to cut into a sound pipe.
The low hardware cost should not be confused with a complete water-protection system. Skip it when the shutoff is corroded, hidden, outdoors, or mechanically incompatible, or when an insurer, building manager, or high-risk property calls for a professionally installed and monitored valve. For a compatible indoor quarter-turn valve, measure first, test the clamp in person, and make the monthly physical check part of the ownership plan.
