Aqara Smart Gate Lock U500

A useful place for keyless entry—if this is your kind of gate

A gate in front of the main door can mean unlocking twice just to get home. Smart Gate Lock U500 puts fingerprint and Apple home key access at that first barrier, with a keypad for codes and mechanical keys as another option.

Its most relevant difference is the hardware on both sides. The inside panel has its own fingerprint reader and keyhole, rather than borrowing the interior arrangement of a standard smart deadbolt. Aqara designs this for iron gates and grilles where reach-through access is a concern. We have not tested resistance to forced entry or credential bypass.

That is a specific job. This review covers Gate Lock U500 DL-D18D, not the separate Rim Lock or Glass Door Lock versions. Sharing the U500 name does not make those products interchangeable.

The gate dimensions can decide the whole purchase

The specified gate thickness is only 22–28 mm, with a 40–45 mm backset and a 3–7 mm gap. The inside frame must sit flush with the gate. Installation uses one 50 mm hole and two 12 mm holes, so “fits a metal gate” is far from a universal promise.

A sagging gate, offset frame or decorative rail in the wrong place can turn this into a metalwork job. At that point, compare the complete installed cost with repairing or replacing the gate's existing lock. A smart motor does not straighten the frame or create the required clearance.

The inner panel is about 168 × 73 × 49 mm, while the outer keypad is about 149 × 72 × 27 mm. Both need usable space. Before choosing it, establish how everyone using the gate will enter and leave, including anyone who will rely on a key rather than fingerprints or a phone.

Taps and fingerprints are the actual convenience

Apple home key provides a deliberate tap with a supported iPhone or Watch. It is not UWB approach unlocking. Aqara explicitly said the U500 series did not support UWB and had no planned firmware update for it in its May 2026 launch discussion.

Local fingerprints and codes mean a phone is not required for every entry. Aqara Home provides access management, including scheduled guests and one-time codes. For app-controlled access while away, a suitable Matter controller and Thread border router must reach the gate; local Bluetooth configuration alone does not provide that remote connection.

That can be inexpensive when the gate is immediately outside the house's existing coverage. A gate across a drive is a less convincing place to assume the indoor hub will work. Additional radio coverage and a practical powered location for it belong in the budget.

A doorbell button is a small extra

The integrated doorbell button can announce a visitor, but U500 has no camera. Seeing who is waiting requires separate video hardware. Do not count the lock as a replacement for a video doorbell merely because an automation can combine the two.

The gyroscope supports auto-lock after closing, with timing and alerts configured in Aqara Home. Aqara's current FAQ also says its door-position display is available only over Bluetooth. Remote lock state should therefore not be treated as a complete remote view of whether the gate is physically shut.

These are useful convenience features when the underlying gate closes and locks smoothly. We have not measured fingerprint recognition, radio range or auto-lock reliability.

Weather protection and battery upkeep are part of ownership

The outside panel is rated IP65, while the inside is IP54. Their temperature ranges also differ: −35°C to 66°C outside and −18°C to 50°C inside. The more generous exterior rating does not apply to both sides.

Four AA cells are included. Aqara's up-to-seven-month estimate uses a 25°C laboratory test with 15 openings and automatic locking cycles per day. Cold weather and actual use can shorten that. The USB-C port provides temporary emergency power; it does not recharge the AA cells.

Two mechanical keys are supplied. Aqara says the cylinder is fixed inside the lock and should not be replaced by the owner, so this is a different proposition from a readily rekeyable deadbolt.

Buy for frequent gate access, not the series name

The UK Shop listed this exact Gate model at £289.99 including VAT on September 10, 2026, in stock and eligible for free UK delivery. Fitting, gate modifications and any additional hub remain separate costs.

U300 lever locks and U400 deadbolts are not substitutes for these mounting requirements. Keep a sound conventional gate lock when key access is already easy and remote entry would rarely be used. U500 becomes more persuasive when the gate fits without substantial work and several people will use its keyless access every day.
