SONOFF S61s Outdoor Type F (S61STPF-PM-O; 6979033600317)

A €20.30 outdoor Matter plug looks like an easy way to automate patio lights or a garden load. SONOFF's exact European S61STPF-PM-O is more conditional than the price suggests: the plug is IP44, but the company still requires a waterproof enclosure outdoors and equivalent weather protection on the connected plug.

That does not make the S61s Outdoor a poor choice. It makes the best buyer someone who already has a sheltered Type F outlet, strong 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and a real use for its meter. SmartThings and Home Assistant get the deepest Matter path. Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa receive the switch, voice, and scene controls but not the power or energy readings. Matterhome has not tested the plug or its weather protection.

The orange cover is not the whole weather plan

SONOFF rates the plug IP44 and gives it an operating range of -20°C to 50°C. Its current help page describes gardens, pool areas, lights, fountains, and irrigation as intended settings. The same page says outdoor use requires a waterproof box, and the connected load plug needs equivalent protection.

Plan around the stricter instruction. The orange cap protects the outlet face when it is closed, but a connected cable holds that cap open. A suitable enclosure has to protect the live connection without pinching the cable, trapping water, or defeating access to the device button and Matter code.

The electrical checks are equally specific. The plug is a European Type F model rated for 100 to 240 V, 50 or 60 Hz, 16 A maximum, and 3840 W maximum. SONOFF's manual also calls for an upstream 16 A MCB or RCBO that complies with national safety standards. Those ceiling values do not prove that every pump, heater, motor, or charger is an appropriate switched load. The appliance instructions, enclosure, circuit protection, and local rules decide that fit.

Matter is the simple part

S61STPF-PM-O connects directly to Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It does not need a SONOFF bridge or a Thread border router, but it still needs a compatible Matter controller in the chosen ecosystem. Hold the device button for five seconds to open a ten-minute pairing window, then scan the Matter code on the plug body from Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

Outdoor Wi-Fi is the infrastructure risk. An exterior wall, metal weather box, closed door, or long route back to the access point can turn a successful setup near the router into an unreliable installation. Pair and update the plug before fitting the enclosure, then test it at the final outlet with doors and windows in their normal positions. A useful trial includes a router restart and a power interruption, because seasonal lighting and irrigation routines often run when nobody is watching the app.

The eWeLink app is still part of ownership. It handles firmware, detailed energy and cost history, export, protection thresholds, timers, LAN control, and power-recovery behavior. Matter is the shared household control layer, not a complete replacement for the product's maintenance tools.

Energy support splits the five ecosystems

SONOFF's current support matrix gives all five ecosystems remote control, voice control, and scenes. Only SmartThings and Home Assistant receive power and energy monitoring through Matter. Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa are listed with no meter exposure.

Firmware matters here. The support matrix says version 1.0.6 or later is required for Matter energy consumption in SmartThings and Home Assistant. An older FAQ line on the same support material still says 1.0.5. Use the higher 1.0.6 threshold until SONOFF removes that conflict, then confirm that the expected power and accumulated-energy entities exist before building a routine around them.

Even on those two platforms, eWeLink remains the richer record. SONOFF documents historical charts, electricity-rate calculations, billing trends, data export, overload thresholds, and charging protection in its own app. The current product page also says bidirectional metering is not available, so this is not yet a defensible choice for tracking exported solar generation.

Buy it for a sheltered European outlet

The EU storefront currently lists the exact model in stock at €20.30. That is a strong price for a removable outdoor Type F plug with direct Matter control and useful SmartThings or Home Assistant energy data. It is less compelling when the waterproof enclosure, Wi-Fi work, or electrical changes cost more than the plug.

Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3 is the closer alternative for a European Wi-Fi home that already relies on Shelly's app and diagnostics. Eve Energy Outdoor is a different class of purchase: it is a hardwired Matter-over-Thread outlet that can strengthen the Thread mesh, but it needs a permanent electrical installation.

Choose the SONOFF when the enclosure and Wi-Fi are already solved, the load is appropriate, and a removable €20 plug is the point. Skip it when the product would sit exposed, energy must appear in an Apple, Google, or Alexa home, or the real outdoor problem is Thread coverage rather than Wi-Fi switching.
