SONOFF Basic Gen5 Matter Over WiFi Smart Switch (BASIC-1GS)

SONOFF Basic Gen5 is a remarkably cheap way to add direct Matter switching when its larger inline case, neutral requirement, and 10 A resistive rating suit the circuit. The hardware price is the easy part; a safe, code-compliant installation and the absence of dimming or energy data decide whether it is actually a bargain.

A six-dollar smart switch sounds like an easy purchase until the cover comes off the circuit. SONOFF Basic Gen5 is a single-channel inline relay with a physical button and direct Matter-over-Wi-Fi control. It can be useful for a lamp, ceiling light, heater, or another simple load, but only when its electrical rating, larger case, protective breaker, and mounting location are settled before anyone scans the code.

Matterhome has not tested BASIC-1GS. Treat this as a compatibility and installation guide, not a verdict on its terminals, heat under load, or long-term reliability.

The real cost is the installation

BASIC-1GS measures 80.5 x 41.5 x 23.6 mm. That is more than twice the length of SONOFF MINIR4M, so it is not the first choice for a crowded wall box. Its covered terminals, mounting holes, and wide top button make more sense in a dry indoor location where the device can be fixed securely and remain serviceable.

The switch needs neutral and live inputs plus neutral and switched-live outputs. SONOFF specifies copper conductors from 16 to 14 AWG, single-phase 100-240 V power at 50 or 60 Hz, and a maximum 10 A resistive load. The help guide also requires an upstream 10 A miniature circuit breaker or a residual-current breaker with integral overcurrent protection.

SONOFF says installation and maintenance belong with a professional electrician. That is the sensible line. A low purchase price does not make exposed mains terminals, uncertain conductor sizing, or an improvised enclosure acceptable. The company lists CE, FCC, and RoHS for BASIC-1GS but does not name a UL or ETL safety listing, so North American buyers should verify the device and installation method against local requirements before ordering several.

Matter handles the ordinary switch

Once the electrical side is working, BASIC-1GS can pair directly with a Matter controller over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It does not need a Thread border router or a SONOFF hub. SONOFF's current guide gives QR-code setup paths for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.

The portable expectation is intentionally plain. SONOFF's platform table documents on, off, voice control, and scenes for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and Home Assistant. Its guide also provides a SmartThings commissioning path. It does not claim that eWeLink schedules, pulse timing, three-month logs, power-on behavior, offline alerts, or device settings move with the switch into every ecosystem.

That split is reasonable for a cheap relay. Use the main Matter platform for everyday control and keep eWeLink only if its extra settings are worth another app. There is no documented dimming or energy-monitoring path, so buyers who need either feature should choose different hardware rather than hoping a firmware update fills the gap.

Magic Switch is a specialized extra

SONOFF's Magic Switch mode is designed to keep BASIC-1GS online when a connected conventional rocker changes the light state. It is not a general Matter feature. The current guide says it works only through eWeLink, needs the documented L1-to-L2 external-switch wiring, and is limited to compatible double-pole rocker switches controlling 3-100 W LED, energy-saving, or incandescent lamps.

Those limits make Magic Switch a useful option for one planned lighting circuit, not a reason to improvise around unfamiliar wiring. A motor, fan, pump, or other inductive load needs its own suitability check because the headline 10 A figure is explicitly a resistive-load rating.

Pick the module for the space

Basic Gen5 earns its place when the device can be mounted safely, a professional has approved the circuit, and basic Matter switching is all the room needs. At about $6 before shipping, it can undercut nearly every finished Matter wall switch.

SONOFF MINIR4M is the better fit behind an existing switch because its enclosure is far smaller and its external-switch support is broader. A finished Matter switch is usually the cleaner purchase when the electrician would otherwise need to solve the enclosure, wall control, and approval path separately. Buy BASIC-1GS for a known inline job, not because its price makes the rest of the installation disappear.

Best for

  • Indoor lights and simple resistive loads with room for an 80.5 mm inline switch
  • Buyers who want basic Matter control without adding Thread infrastructure or a brand hub
  • Installations where a physical button or eWeLink-only external-switch mode is useful

Skip if

  • The circuit lacks a neutral, a suitable mounting location, or a locally accepted installation path
  • The load needs dimming, energy monitoring, or an unverified motor or inductive-load rating
  • A compact relay must fit behind an existing wall switch
  • Professional mains installation would cost more than choosing a finished smart switch
