A smoother line with an awkward price

Govee COB Strip Light Pro H61E6 is most appealing where you can see the light itself: along a shelf edge, a furniture recess or a deliberate architectural line. Its closely packed LEDs and silicone diffuser are designed to make that line look continuous instead of showing a row of bright dots. That is the feature worth paying for.

The price is the problem. On September 10, 2026, the five-metre US kit was $149.99 with free shipping shown. The newer COB Strip Light 2 Pro was $169.99 at the same length. Saving $20 is not a strong reason to choose the original when the newer model's white-light specification is substantially more versatile.

Buy the finish, not the LED count

Govee advertises 1,260 LEDs per metre and twelve controllable sections per metre. The density explains the intended smooth appearance; it does not mean you get 1,260 independently programmable picture elements. Color changes and moving effects are built around the larger sections.

That can look purposeful when the strip follows one clean line. It is less convincing to pay for a silicone-covered strip and then hide it completely behind a cabinet where only reflected light is visible. In that position, a simpler strip or a working one you already own may provide the atmosphere you want.

The original uses RGBIC+W lighting. I would buy it primarily for continuous accent color, rather than assume it has the newer model's 1,000–10,000K white range. Govee specifically advertises that range on COB Strip Light 2 Pro, alongside separate warm and cool white LEDs. For a run that will provide useful white light every day, that is a more relevant difference than another increase in LED density.

Cutting solves length, not a complicated layout

The five-metre strip can be shortened at marked points, with the resulting length calibrated in the app. It cannot be extended or joined to another strip. Those two facts make a big difference to value: you can trim a run to fit a shelf, but you cannot assume the leftover piece becomes a second working shelf light.

Several separated cabinets or sharp changes of direction need more thought than one continuous edge. The manual warns against tight bends and clips placed too closely. I would avoid buying this as a general kit of pieces to splice around a room; choose it for a route that the supplied strip can follow sensibly.

It is also an indoor product despite the silicone covering. Leave room for the inline controller, adapter and outlet connection. A neat glowing line is less satisfying if the power brick and dangling cable are the most conspicuous things beside it.

Useful buttons, familiar app dependence

The inline controller provides power, brightness and color buttons, so a phone is not compulsory for every adjustment. Leave those buttons reachable if other people will use the room. Detailed segments, music effects and scene design still belong in Govee Home; Matter supplies ordinary light control through a compatible controller over Wi-Fi.

That arrangement is reasonable for decorative lighting. It becomes a drawback if your main reason for buying is to create intricate effects entirely inside another smart-home app.

The shorter kit has a better argument

The three-metre H61E5 kit was $99.99 on the same date. It is worth considering when that length fits the job exactly and color is the priority. The newer Pro's $99.99 starting kit is only two metres, so those entry prices do not buy equal lengths.

For a five-metre purchase, I would favor the newer COB Strip Light 2 Pro at the current $20 difference, or wait for a meaningful discount on this original. For a shaped wall decoration, Neon Rope Light 2 has bendable mounting clips and a design process built around that job, although you cannot cut it to length.

Keep an existing COB installation if its white light, colors and controls already satisfy you. A better specification on the successor is a reason to compare new purchases, not a reason to pull a good strip off the wall.
