SwitchBot's KATA beta stays inside the SwitchBot app

SwitchBot app 10.0 adds conversational device control, automations, and troubleshooting, but Bluetooth gear still needs a SwitchBot hub and Matter remains a separate path.

SwitchBot released version 10.0 of its iPhone and iPad app on August 12, 2026, with the KATA AI Assistant beta. The US App Store listing says KATA can control devices across rooms, check status and battery levels, change device settings, provide installation steps, and help troubleshoot products through a conversation. It does not add a Matter device type or expand what SwitchBot hardware exposes to another smart-home platform.

That distinction decides whether this update is useful. KATA works inside SwitchBot's app. The company's support page also says it can create SwitchBot scenes and automations, while version 10.0 separately adds duration conditions for temperature and humidity automations. If the SwitchBot app is already where you manage a mixed room of curtains, sensors, locks, fans, and lights, natural-language control could remove some menu hunting. If daily control happens entirely in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant, the release notes do not promise the same assistant there.

The hub requirement did not disappear

SwitchBot says its Bluetooth products must be connected to a hub before KATA can control them. Otherwise, the request may time out. That makes the SwitchBot Hub 3 and other compatible SwitchBot hubs part of the KATA path for Bluetooth devices, even when those products are also bridged into a Matter ecosystem.

Matter remains a separate portability layer. SwitchBot's compatibility list distinguishes products exposed through a SwitchBot Matter bridge from devices that connect directly over Matter on Wi-Fi. The KATA documentation does not say that the assistant can manage third-party Matter products, operate another platform's Matter fabric, or carry SwitchBot-only scenes and settings into receiving ecosystems. Keep judging each product by what its Matter endpoint exposes, not by what KATA can do in the vendor app.

The beta supports spoken responses and voice recognition in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. SwitchBot also says KATA remembers context only within the current conversation. The confirmed rollout here is app version 10.0 in Apple's US store; the support pages checked by Matterhome do not state an Android date or a country-by-country rollout.

Conversation brings a cloud tradeoff

KATA is not a local Matter control feature. SwitchBot's privacy policy says text, voice, images, device names, device status, and control instructions can be sent to third-party service providers for model, speech, and image processing. SwitchBot says the providers do not keep the original inputs or use results to train their own models, but generated replies, device-control results, and related service records are stored on SwitchBot cloud servers so users can review or delete them.

Update one household member's app first, try KATA on a non-critical device, and check the resulting scene or automation before relying on it. Owners who prefer their Matter controller and local automations can ignore the beta or hide KATA from the SwitchBot home screen. Version 10.0 makes the vendor app more conversational; it does not make that app disappear from a Matter setup.
