Amazon launched a new Echo Dot on October 28, 2026, and it is the first basic Dot that Amazon says has a built-in smart home hub with Zigbee, Matter and Thread support. In the US it costs $99.99 and, according to Amazon's announcement, ships now in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green and Coral Pink. The Amazon Kids Echo Dot starts at $109.99, and Amazon says it has the same features. The new Dot also runs on Amazon's AZ3 chip, adds a fourth microphone and can act as a Wi-Fi extender for a home that already uses an eero network.
Who gains a Thread hub
Older Dots can control Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices through Alexa, but they are not on Amazon's lists of Zigbee hubs or Thread border routers. Amazon's Matter documentation says a Thread border router must commission a Matter-over-Thread device before Alexa can use it. Until now that meant an Echo (4th Gen), an Echo Plus (2nd Gen), an Echo Dot Max, an Echo Hub, certain Echo Show models, an Echo Studio or an eero router. An Alexa home built on older Dots or an Echo Pop needed one of those before it could add a Thread lock or sensor.
Going by Amazon's description, the new Dot removes that extra purchase. In an Alexa home with no hub-equipped Echo or eero, one Dot can now act as the Alexa controller for Thread and Zigbee accessories while also being the speaker in that room. If you already own one of those devices, the new Dot adds another speaker and another place for Thread hardware, not a capability you lacked. Keep a working older Dot unless you plan to add Thread or Zigbee accessories and have nothing else that can set them up.
Echo Dot or Echo Dot Max
Amazon raised the Echo Dot Max list price to $119.99 in late August, PCWorld reported, so the new Dot's list price is $20 lower. Dot Max is a Zigbee hub and Thread border router too, and its separate woofer and tweeter remain the reason to choose it for a room where music matters. The new Dot uses a full-range driver, which Amazon says delivers 50% more bass than the previous Dot. For a bedroom, office or hallway that needs the hub more than better sound, the new Dot does that job for $20 less at list. A Dot Max sale changes the math: Target had it below $100 on October 23, and at that price the Max is the safer buy because Amazon already lists it as a Thread 1.3 border router.
The new Dot lists at twice the previous Dot's $49.99 list price, which Amazon raised to $79.99 in the same August increase. If you find the previous Dot discounted, remember that it still cannot add Thread or Zigbee accessories.
Not yet on Amazon's lists
Amazon has not published the new Dot's Thread version. Its developer Thread support page says Thread-enabled Echo and eero devices run Thread 1.1 or 1.3 and had not added the new Dot when we checked on October 29. For an Alexa-only home that matters little. In a home that also runs Apple Home or Google Home, Thread 1.4 is the version meant to help a border router join an existing Thread network instead of creating another one, and every Echo and eero on Amazon's list today runs 1.1 or 1.3. Until Amazon lists the new Dot's version, do not assume it brings Thread 1.4.
Amazon's announcements for its other October 28 devices do not mention a hub. The Echo Show 16 is on preorder at $499.99 and ships later this year. Amazon presents it as a smart home dashboard with the new Alexa Home Map but says nothing about a Thread border router or Zigbee hub, even though its developer pages list the Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen) as both. The same goes for Echo Studio with Home Camera ($249.99), Echo Time ($199.99) and Alexa Photo Frame, and trade site CEPRO also credits the hub only to the Dot. The camera-free Echo Studio, still $219.99, is on Amazon's Thread border router list; the camera model is not listed. Buy those devices for the screen, camera or clock, and do not count on them for Thread until Amazon lists them.
Amazon's announcement gives US prices only. German site ifun.de reported on October 28 that the new Dot, with the same Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub, is available now at €104.99. We found no UK announcement or price from Amazon by October 29.
Amazon's Thread border router list is where to confirm the new Dot's Thread version, and whether the Echo Show 16 joins it when it ships.
