# Ring's $100 peephole camera has no documented Matter path

Ring's new Peephole Cam 2K is a renter-friendly Wi-Fi camera for Ring and Alexa homes, not a documented Matter camera for cross-platform video.

Ring's Peephole Cam 2K went on preorder on August 5, 2026, according to The Verge. The second-generation camera replaces an existing door peephole without drilling or wiring and costs $99.99 in the United States. Ring's regional listings put it at EUR99.99 in Europe and GBP79.99 in the United Kingdom. None of those product pages documents a Matter setup path.

Ring specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy, with live view, two-way talk, and alerts handled through the Ring app. Its product page also names a compatible Echo Show as the in-home display option. It does not describe Matter commissioning, multi-admin sharing, or video in Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

## The door is the first compatibility check

The no-drill promise is useful for an apartment only when the existing peephole fits. Ring's European listing requires a standard 12 mm to 14 mm opening and separates doors into 32.5 mm to 60 mm and 60 mm to 90 mm versions. Installing the camera also removes the ordinary optical view through the door, so checking a visitor then requires the Ring app or a compatible Echo Show.

The rechargeable battery avoids doorbell wiring, and Ring claims more than 120 days per charge depending on use and settings. The camera records at 2K with a 140-degree square field of view and up to 6x zoom. Those upgrades do not fix weak 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi outside a flat or make battery charging disappear.

The US and European pages were still taking preorders when checked on August 11. The Verge reported that shipping was expected later in August, but Ring's regional product pages do not publish a firm delivery date. Treat it as a preorder rather than hardware that can be installed today.

The Matter 1.5 specification added cameras in November 2025, but the device maker and receiving platform still have to implement that path. Ring's launch pages present Peephole Cam 2K as a Ring camera with Alexa display support. A 2K label and a Wi-Fi connection are not substitutes for documented Matter camera commissioning.

Ring leaves live view, two-way talk, and real-time motion alerts outside the paid plan. Recorded video for up to 180 days, package alerts, video descriptions, familiar-face features, and other advanced functions require a Ring subscription. Buyers should price that service alongside the hardware instead of treating $99.99 as the full cost of ownership.

Peephole Cam 2K makes sense when the door fits, drilling is off limits, Ring is already the accepted security app, and Alexa is the desired display path. Skip the preorder if the requirement is portable camera video across Matter ecosystems. Ring has not documented that product path, and Matterhome has not tested the camera or its installation.
