# LIFX's Matter upgrade replaces the old setup path

LIFX is rolling Matter firmware out to eligible existing lights and switches, but the update replaces legacy HomeKit credentials and cannot be undone with a standard reset.

LIFX updated its support guidance on July 30, 2026, to say that Matter firmware is [rolling out gradually](https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/34857864915095-Matter-Firmware-Updates-for-LIFX-Devices) to eligible SuperColor Indoor Neon Flex lights, LCM3 Beam and Lightstrip models, and LIFX Smart Switches. Owners should not tap “Matterize” casually. The migration replaces legacy Apple HomeKit credentials, and a factory reset will not restore the old firmware or setup code.

The update is useful when local Matter control and sharing a light across ecosystems matter more than preserving the current setup. It is still a staged release, so availability varies by product, model, and region. If the option does not appear in the latest LIFX app, the safe assumption is that the device is either not eligible or has not reached its rollout slot.

## Check the hardware before the update

LIFX lists LCM3 editions of Beam and Lightstrip as eligible. Their firmware number must begin with v3; older v2 hardware cannot take the Matter update. The company also excludes a small batch of Smart Switches sold in Australia and New Zealand. Its support page does not identify that batch beyond the regional warning, and affected switches will not show the update option. LIFX's separate compatibility list still marks the SuperColor String Light timeline as pending.

This is a Matter-over-Wi-Fi migration, not a Thread upgrade. LIFX says its SuperColor lights and Smart Switches connect directly to Wi-Fi without a hub. Updating one will not add a Thread router to the room or improve an existing Thread mesh.

For eligible Smart Switches, firmware 4.100 or later adds local Matter button actions. Some behavior stays tied to LIFX: backlight sync still needs a LIFX Cloud connection, and cloud actions still require both the switch and target device to be online. Matter makes the common control path local, but it does not move every LIFX feature into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.

## Save the new code before reconnecting

On Apple Home, the existing HomeKit connection is decommissioned during the upgrade. The printed HomeKit code on the product or packaging stops being the setup credential for that device. The LIFX app generates a new Matter QR code, which owners need to save before leaving the update screen and use to reconnect the product.

After the device restarts, its Matter commissioning window stays open for 15 minutes. A Matter-enabled Smart Switch can reopen that window without losing its configuration by holding all buttons until the status LED turns blue, then releasing them. That is different from the old green-flashing LIFX setup mode, so legacy reset instructions no longer apply after the migration.

Update one non-critical device first, keep it powered, and confirm that its ordinary controls and automations work in the main ecosystem before moving the rest of a room. Owners who depend on an existing HomeKit setup and do not need cross-platform Matter control have a good reason to wait. The rollout is staged, and a standard factory reset does not reverse the migration.
