Homey announced it on September 1, 2026, and opened first-batch preorders at $249 in its US store and €249 in its euro storefront. The regular prices are $299 and €299, and orders are expected to ship before the end of 2026. Portal uses USB-C power; Homey includes a 1.5-meter cable and adapter with the desk and wall mounts. Portal is assigned to one Homey zone, such as a living room or kitchen, where anyone can reach it without opening a phone app. It surfaces devices in that zone and any nested zones, while shortcuts can still reach devices elsewhere in the home. A tap can switch the lights, while the ring adjusts brightness, connected-speaker volume, or a thermostat target. The display can also show now-playing information, album art, energy use, camera feeds, and prompts from Homey Flows. Owners can pin devices, Moods, and Flows to multiple shortcut pages, or assign a double tap to one quick action. ## A screen for Homey, not another hub The underlying Homey system is not optional. Portal works with Homey Cloud, [Homey Pro](/devices/homey-pro) models from 2023 through 2026, [Homey Pro mini](/devices/homey-pro-mini), and Homey Self-Hosted Server. The compatibility list does not name earlier Pro generations. The Homey mobile app is required for setup and customization, and one Portal connects to one Homey at a time. Despite the climate controls, Homey says Portal cannot replace a thermostat or communicate directly with a boiler. Homey Cloud is free for up to five devices, but a larger Cloud setup needs Homey Premium. The energy view also needs a Homey Energy Dongle or a compatible third-party smart meter; Homey says Cloud users need Premium for that view unless they use its Energy Dongle. Homey describes support for "most device types," so buyers should not assume every device type or control will be available on Portal at launch. Homey does not identify Portal as a Matter controller just because it can operate a Matter light or thermostat. The company's Matter 1.5 documentation names Homey Pro, Pro mini, and Self-Hosted Server as the controllers that add Matter devices over Thread or Wi-Fi. Portal is not on that list, and its product page makes no Thread border router claim. On a Matter-capable Homey, Portal is an interface for devices that Homey already controls, however Homey connected them. Homey Cloud is not on the Matter-controller list either, so Portal with the free Cloud tier is not a documented hubless path for commissioning Matter accessories. Homey already offers customizable Dashboards and kiosk mode on phones and tablets. The company has not said Portal runs that existing widget system; the launch instead focuses on zone controls, shortcuts, and the tactile ring. Homey also has not documented Portal's own network connection or whether the display keeps controlling a local Homey Pro during an internet outage. At $249 or €249, Portal should earn its place by replacing daily trips into the Homey app for one busy room. A household already served by a phone or tablet Dashboard is paying for the ring and dedicated surface, not a new Matter path. Buyers who need confirmed offline room control should wait for Homey to document it; those who need a standalone Matter controller should look elsewhere.
