# Homey can now update Matter devices itself

Homey Device Updates can install Matter firmware from the CSA ledger, but an update appears only when the manufacturer publishes it there.

Homey announced Device Updates on August 28, 2026, giving owners a way to install available Matter firmware without returning to a device maker's app. The feature is available on Homey Cloud, [Homey Pro](/devices/homey-pro) models from 2023 through 2026, [Homey Pro mini](/devices/homey-pro-mini), and Homey Self-Hosted Server.

For Matter devices, Homey looks for firmware in the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Distributed Compliance Ledger. That is the useful part of this release: a compatible update can reach a device through its Matter controller even when there is no Homey app for the manufacturer. It is also the hard limit. Homey cannot offer firmware that the manufacturer has not published to the ledger, and its support guide says not every connected device will have an update available.

Zigbee and Z-Wave support follows a different path. Those files come through each product's Homey app, so the app developer and manufacturer still decide what appears. Homey says 14 manufacturers already support that route, including IKEA, Aeotec, Inovelli, ThirdReality, and Zooz. That list does not prove that every model from those brands has current firmware waiting.

## Update one noncritical device first

Homey Pro and Self-Hosted Server need version 13.2.0 or later, while the mobile app needs version 9.10.0 or later. Updates are started manually from `More → Settings → Device Updates`, or from the Maintenance section in an individual device's settings. The web app also exposes the update view.

Homey installs only one device update at a time to avoid loading a Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread mesh. Multiple devices can be queued, except sleepy battery devices that must be woken manually. A plug or light may briefly switch during the process, failed updates can be restarted, and Homey does not support downgrading to an older version.

That makes a powered lamp or plug with no important automation the right first test. Check that Homey offers the expected version, confirm control returns after the update, and verify its Flows before moving to locks, alarms, heating, or several battery sensors. Keep the manufacturer's app installed until the exact devices in the home have proved that their firmware is actually published through Matter and arrives cleanly through Homey.
