# Google Home now remembers device context for 15 minutes Google's July 23 Gemini update carries smart-home context for 15 minutes, but Live chats cannot run device commands mid-conversation and old-hub support is unclear. Its [release notes](https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/15962877?hl=en) use a smart-home example: ask Google to turn on the kitchen lights, then say "dim it to 50%" several minutes later without naming the lights again. The change is part of Gemini for Home early access and may take time to reach every eligible home. Google's [availability page](https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/16613534?hl=en) currently lists 20 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. That longer context is useful for anyone controlling Matter devices through Google Home. A light, plug, blind, or thermostat can be easier to adjust when the follow-up does not need the exact room and device name again. It does not add a new Matter device type or expose a feature that Google Home did not already support. It changes how the voice assistant remembers the device you were discussing. ## Live is not the smart-home upgrade The same release notes say paid Gemini Live is now available on the first-generation Google Home Mini and Nest Hub. That sounds like a reason to keep older hardware, but Live is separate from the 15-minute context used for normal voice commands. Google's [conversation support page](https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7685981?p=gemini_live&rd=1) says Gemini Live is for informational back-and-forth chats and requires a Standard or Advanced Google Home Premium plan. Smart-home actions are not supported during a Live session. Saying "Hey Google" to control a device stops the chat and handles the command normally. Continued Conversation supports smart-home actions without a paid plan. Google's documentation also needs to catch up with the announcement. Its main [Gemini for Home compatibility page](https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/16618650?hl=en) still says older speakers and displays, including the first-generation Home Mini and Nest Hub, do not support Gemini Live. The July 23 release note may describe a staged expansion that the older page has not yet reflected, but owners should wait for the option to appear on their own device before treating it as available. ## Old hubs remain Wi-Fi-only Both first-generation devices still have a useful Matter job. Google's [hub list](https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/12391458?hl=en-GB) names the Home Mini and first-generation Nest Hub as Matter hubs for Wi-Fi devices. Neither is a Thread border router. Keeping one for voice control does not provide the Thread network needed by a Matter-over-Thread lock, sensor, or button. If Gemini for Home early access is already active in your home, enable Continued Conversation and test the 15-minute memory with one ordinary device command. Keep the older speaker or display if it handles that job reliably. Replace it only when you need something the hardware still cannot provide, such as a Thread border router, not because a paid Live chat sounds like a smarter way to turn on the lights.
