A dimmer for plug-in lamps
Tapo P135 KIT is different from a normal smart plug. It is meant for a lamp, not a heater, coffee maker, or random appliance. The useful feature is Matter-controlled brightness for a plug-in light where replacing the wall switch is not practical.
That makes it a good renter-friendly option if the lamp and bulb are compatible. The wrong bulb can still buzz, flicker, or refuse to dim smoothly.
Setup path
Start with the lamp. Confirm the bulb is dimmable and that the lamp is an appropriate load for the kit. Then set up the device on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and pair it into your Matter ecosystem with the included code.
The Tapo app remains useful for firmware and any dimming behavior that the platform app does not expose.
What to check
Test the low end of the dimming range before hiding the plug or building automations. Many dimming complaints happen below the level where the bulb is comfortable. If you only need on/off control, a simpler Matter plug is cheaper and less picky.
Best for
- Table and floor lamps with compatible dimmable bulbs
- Renters who want Matter dimming without changing a wall switch
- Homes that prefer Wi-Fi Matter devices over Thread accessories
Skip if
- You want to switch non-lighting appliances
- The lamp uses a non-dimmable or specialty bulb
- You need a wall dimmer for built-in ceiling lights
