Tado now sells two wired Smart Thermostat X generations at the same time. The new `RU05` costs more, but it is not a vague annual refresh. It replaces the first model's AAA batteries and three-button face with rechargeable power, a slimmer body, a circular touch control, and a top-button shortcut. Both generations use the same direct Matter-over-Thread path, so the extra money buys better hardware rather than broader smart-home compatibility.

Matterhome has not tested the thermostat or its integrations. Start with the heating-system match, then decide whether the new interface is worth the premium.

## The newer face changes daily use

RU05 is 110 x 110 x 17.8 mm and uses a built-in lithium-ion battery charged over USB-C. Tado says a charge should last through a heating season, although the cable is not included. The circular light ring handles temperature changes, the LED matrix shows temperature and humidity, and the new top button can resume the schedule, boost heating, or show humidity.

The [first-generation wired model](/devices/tado-wired-smart-thermostat-x) is smaller across the wall at 100 x 100 mm but thicker at 21 mm. It runs on three replaceable AAA batteries and uses a backlit LCD with three mechanical controls. On September 5, 2026, Tado's UK store listed that older model at £79.99 and RU05 at £109.99. Those current prices turn the generation choice into a £30 decision rather than an automatic upgrade.

Tado says the second generation works with existing Tado X products, including first-generation thermostats, sensors, radiator valves, Bridge X, and Wireless Receiver X. It is not compatible with V3+ or older Tado lines. Replacing one room controller does not create a migration path for an older V3+ home.

## Matter is direct, but Thread is still required

RU05 is a native Matter thermostat over Thread. The exact device has a Matter code on its back and does not require a Tado-branded bridge when the home already has compatible Thread infrastructure. A single-product purchase therefore makes sense beside suitable Thread infrastructure from Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or another supported provider.

The starter kit adds [Bridge X](/devices/tado-bridge-x). That is the safer first purchase when there is no established Thread network or when the Tado app needs predictable coverage. Tado's Google Home and Alexa instructions start by installing the thermostat in its app, then sharing it with a new numeric linking code; Apple Home can also commission a new unit directly. The printed QR code no longer handles a second-fabric step after the device has joined Tado.

This order matters most with Alexa. Tado says some Amazon Thread border routers cannot deliver its firmware and security updates because they lack the required NAT64 support. Initial Tado setup keeps those updates available before the thermostat is shared to Alexa. Home Assistant owners should use the Matter integration; Home Assistant's separate Tado integration explicitly does not support Tado X devices.

Matter covers the common thermostat path, not the entire Tado service. Tado's current platform instructions say domestic hot-water control is not exposed through Matter. Schedules, firmware, AI Assist, installation guidance, and heating-specific settings remain Tado app jobs. Adding the same thermostat to several Matter fabrics can also reduce battery life slightly.

## The wire decides before the generation

The new thermostat replaces an existing wired room thermostat or controls a water-based underfloor heating zone. Tado lists relay and OpenTherm systems across boilers and heat pumps, but that product-level list is not proof that the terminals, voltage, control method, and heating configuration in a particular home match.

## Pay for RU05 when the controller itself matters

The standalone second-generation thermostat currently costs £109.99 in the United Kingdom and €119.99 in Tado's European store. A starter kit with Bridge X starts at £159.99 or €179.99. The older wired thermostat is still on sale for less, uses the same Matter-over-Thread control path, and remains compatible with the rest of Tado X.

Choose RU05 when the thermostat is in a prominent room, the rechargeable battery removes an annoyance, or the light ring and shortcut button will be used every day. Choose the first generation when the display is mostly ignored and a £30 UK saving matters more than the redesign. Skip both until the heating compatibility and Thread plan are settled, because neither generation fixes the wrong wires or a missing border router.
