# Tado Heat Pump Optimizer X

Heat Pump Optimizer X is the Tado X device for households that want Tado to manage a compatible European heat pump, not just a room thermostat. The Matter path is useful, but the heat pump compatibility and Tado service model decide whether it is worth buying.

## Ecosystem Support

- Apple Home: Supported
- Google Home: Supported
- Alexa: Supported
- SmartThings: Supported
- Home Assistant: Supported

## Best For

- Compatible air-to-water, water-to-water, or geothermal heat pumps
- Homes that want heat pump schedules and energy views in Tado
- Tado X setups that can use the optimizer as Thread infrastructure

## Skip If

- Your heat pump is not confirmed compatible
- You only need a basic room thermostat
- You expect dynamic tariff optimization without the required tariff and service setup

## Setup Notes

- Run Tado's heat pump compatibility check before buying.
- Use the Tado app for heat pump setup, schedules, energy views, and Tado Balance features.
- No separate Bridge X is needed for the Tado X network because the optimizer functions as a Thread border router.

## Known Limitations

- Compatibility depends on the exact heat pump model and control interface.
- Dynamic tariff optimization depends on local energy tariff support and service setup.
- It is not compatible with Tado V3+ systems.

## Pros

- Matter and Thread heat pump control path
- Works with air-to-water, water-to-water, and geothermal heat pumps
- Functions as a Thread border router
- Supports Tado app schedules and energy usage views

## Cons

- Heat pump compatibility must be checked carefully
- Tado Balance and dynamic tariff optimization depend on services and energy tariffs
- Matter ecosystem controls may be simpler than Tado's own app

## A heat pump controller, not a simple thermostat

Heat Pump Optimizer X is for a different buyer than the Tado wall thermostat. It is meant to control compatible air-to-water, water-to-water, and geothermal heat pumps, including setups where the heat pump is not already connected to a thermostat.

That makes compatibility the whole story. If Tado does not support the heat pump and control interface, the Matter logo is not enough.

## What Matter changes

Tado lists the optimizer as part of the X range that runs on Matter and Thread. It also says the optimizer functions as a Thread border router, so a separate Bridge X is not required for the Tado X Thread path.

Matter can make the device visible to a broader smart home setup. The heat pump-specific work still belongs in Tado: schedules, live energy views, system tests, tariff-aware behavior, and service setup.

## Where it fits

This is a better fit for a household trying to make a heat pump less wasteful than for someone replacing a basic room thermostat. It can matter more when dynamic energy pricing or Tado Balance is part of the plan, but that depends on local tariff support and the buyer's willingness to use Tado's service layer.

If the heating problem is a single boiler thermostat, use the wired or wireless Smart Thermostat X page instead.

## Should you buy it?

Buy it when the heat pump is compatible and Tado's energy features are the reason for the purchase. Skip it if the heat pump path is uncertain or if the smart home only needs basic temperature control.
