# Philips Hue Bridge and Bridge Pro

The Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro is the right Matter path when you already have, or plan to build, a real Philips Hue system. It shares Hue lights outward through Matter while keeping Hue features in the Hue app, but it is overkill if you only want one or two direct Matter bulbs.

## Ecosystem Support

- Apple Home: Limited
- Google Home: Limited
- Alexa: Limited
- SmartThings: Limited
- Home Assistant: Limited

## Best For

- Existing Philips Hue homes with older bulbs, remotes, and accessories
- Buyers who want Hue scenes and the Hue app plus basic Matter control elsewhere
- Larger lighting setups where Bridge Pro capacity matters

## Skip If

- You only want direct Matter-over-Thread Hue lights
- You expect every Hue app feature to appear unchanged in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant
- Your Hue products are connected only by Bluetooth

## Setup Notes

- Add Hue lights and accessories to the Hue app and Bridge first.
- Enable Matter integration from the Hue app's Smart Home settings when sharing Hue products to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another Matter controller.
- For a direct Matter bulb setup, remove the bulb from the Bridge before pairing it directly.

## Known Limitations

- Matter bridge exposure focuses on Matter-defined controls rather than every Hue feature.
- Hue products connected only by Bluetooth are not part of the Matter bridge path.
- Home Assistant is marked limited because Philips Hue does not list it on the product compatibility field.

## Pros

- Exposes a broader Hue system to Matter without replacing older Hue lights
- Keeps Hue app setup, scenes, firmware updates, and accessories available
- Bridge Pro supports more lights and accessories than the older Bridge
- Does not require a Thread border router for the bridged Hue path

## Cons

- It is a bridge path, not direct Matter for every connected Hue product
- Matter does not carry every Hue scene, effect, entertainment, or accessory feature into every ecosystem
- The Philips Hue Play HDMI sync box and Tap dial switch dial are Matter exceptions
- Not necessary for a small setup of direct Matter Hue bulbs

## The hub path for the rest of Hue

The Hue Bridge is the reason older and broader Hue setups belong in Matter without adding every Hue light as a direct Matter device. Philips Hue says all Hue products work with Matter when connected through the Bridge, with specific exceptions such as the Play HDMI sync box and the dial control on the Tap dial switch.

That is useful, but it is not the same as direct Matter. The individual lights still belong to the Hue system. Matter receives the parts Hue exposes through the bridge.

## Bridge or Bridge Pro

The older Hue Bridge remains the familiar route for many existing homes. Bridge Pro is the current higher-capacity hub, with support for more lights and accessories plus newer Hue features such as MotionAware.

Buy the hub based on the Hue system you want to manage. Do not buy it only because a single Essential bulb can also pair directly through Matter. For a small direct Matter setup, the Bridge may add more system than you need.

## Setup path

Set up the Bridge in the Hue app, add your Hue products there, install updates, and then enable the Matter connection from Hue's Smart Home settings. Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant should be treated as receiving ecosystems, not replacements for every Hue feature.

If you later want to pair a Matter-enabled Hue bulb directly, remove it from the Bridge first. A device should not be treated as both a bridged Hue light and a direct Matter light at the same time.

## Should you buy it?

Buy the Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro when Hue is the lighting system you actually want. Skip it when the goal is simply to add one or two Matter-over-Thread Hue lights to an existing Matter home.
