Level Bolt Matter is for the door where the hardware already looks right. It replaces the bolt and hides its motor and CR2 battery inside the existing deadbolt, so the exterior cylinder, interior thumb turn, finish, and physical keys can stay. The appeal is real, but only if the exact lock and the exact Level Bolt edition pass inspection first.

## Check the box before the door

The current [$199 Level Bolt listing](https://level.co/products/level-bolt/matter/) explicitly names Matter over Thread and Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings. CSA's current certificate narrows the identity further to family SKU `A-F22U`, variant `C-D21U`, hardware `B12`, and firmware `3.7.0`.

That exactness matters because Level has sold Bolt under other connection paths. Its [Matter smart-lock guide](https://level.co/matter-smart-lock-guide/) says an existing Level Bolt cannot be updated to Matter. Do not buy discounted old stock, a used unit, or a Level Bolt Wi-Fi listing and assume an app update will turn it into this model. The packaging or retailer listing should say Matter, and an ambiguous unit is a reason to walk away.

For the current model, the network path is straightforward. Matter control runs over Thread, so the home needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router near the entry. A Level Connect bridge is not required for that path. Level recommends adding the lock to the Level Home app before the ecosystem app so firmware, keypad setup, guest passes, volume, and other Level features remain accessible.

## Invisible hardware makes fit more important

Many retrofit locks sit visibly over the inside thumb turn. Level Bolt goes deeper by replacing the bolt itself and fitting its motor inside the door. That keeps both sides of the lockset unchanged, but it makes mechanical compatibility the first buying test.

Level lists most American standard deadbolts with a profile of at least 0.75 inch, backsets of 2.375 or 2.75 inches, door thickness from 1.75 to 2 inches, and a standard 2.125-inch bore. Its [technical specifications](https://level.co/support/articles/level-bolt-matter-technical-specifications/) also require one of the supplied Level strike plates. Check the existing model against Level's compatibility tool instead of treating those measurements as a guarantee.

The bolt should extend and retract without scraping when the door is open and closed. A motor hidden in the door has less tolerance for a sagging hinge, tight weather seal, or poorly aligned strike. Fix that friction before installation. Level says the Bolt cannot receive a complete lock certification because it reuses the existing deadbolt housing, although the company tests the product to ANSI Grade 1 and BHMA A standards. That is different from certifying the final mixed lock assembly.

## Matter control and Level access are separate jobs

Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings are the named Matter destinations. Expect the shared lock job first: remote control, voice or app actions, and automations where the chosen platform permits them. Test unlock safeguards, household permissions, notifications, and multi-admin sharing rather than assuming identical behavior across all four systems.

The Level Home app still handles the product-specific layer. Level's [setup guide](https://level.co/support/articles/how-to-add-a-level-bolt-matter-to-your-smart-home/) keeps firmware updates, timed or recurring guest passes, keypad codes, and volume control there. The optional Level Keypad costs $79. Level Connect is also $79 and adds a separate Wi-Fi route for advanced Level features, but it is not a substitute for the Thread border router used by Matter.

Home Assistant is a cautious case. Its Matter integration supports locks, but Level does not name Home Assistant for this exact model. Pairing should be treated as a compatibility check, not a promised feature matrix. Matterhome has not tested the Bolt with any ecosystem.

## The $199 decision

Level advertises up to one year from the included CR2 battery. Door alignment, daily cycles, radio conditions, and how often the motor has to fight the latch will affect that estimate. Keep a physical key available while the lock proves its battery warnings, Thread connection, and recovery steps.

The base price makes sense when invisible hardware is the priority and a phone or physical key is enough. It becomes a $278 lock once the keypad is essential, and it still does not carry the Home Key or integrated door-status pitch of [Level Lock Pro](/devices/level-lock-pro).

[Aqara Smart Lock U200](/devices/aqara-smart-lock-u200) and [Nuki Smart Lock Deadbolt](/devices/nuki-smart-lock-deadbolt) are better comparisons when a visible interior retrofit is acceptable and avoiding bolt replacement matters more than hiding the motor. Level Bolt Matter wins when the exact deadbolt fits, the Thread network reaches the door, and keeping the existing lockset unchanged is the reason for the purchase.
