# Govee Christmas String Lights 2

Worth buying for a Christmas tree that should look good in steady warm white as well as in color, thanks to dedicated white LEDs and one continuous string sized to the tree. Matter covers only on/off, brightness and one color, so the animated shows stay in Govee Home. Nanoleaf's holiday set is the better pick in North America when buttons matter on a 6 to 8 foot indoor tree, and Govee's higher European and UK prices make it worth buying there only when the color shows will get regular use.

## What we like

- Dedicated warm white LEDs give a steady white look between color shows
- One continuous string, sold in lengths matched to tree height
- Camera shape mapping fits effects to the tree you actually decorated
- Outdoor-rated strings work down to -4°F (-20°C) on a porch or shrubs

## What could be better

- Matter control stops at on/off, brightness and one color
- The control box has only a power button
- The IP44 adapter needs a dry spot or a waterproof box outdoors
- Sold as seasonal decor, and US and UK sets carry only a 12-month Govee warranty

## Buy it for the warm white as much as the show

Govee's Christmas String Lights 2 make the most sense on a tree that spends most of December in a steady warm glow and only some evenings running color animations. Each LED adds a dedicated warm white channel to its red, green and blue, so the quiet setting uses true warm white instead of a color mix. Both MatterAlpha and Game Rant found the whites lean slightly yellow, so the set suits a warm, traditional look better than a crisp cool white. That answers the usual objection to animated tree lights: a lot of money for something that mostly sits in one color. The same string still has more than 130 preset scenes, a microphone in the control box for music modes and an editor for custom effects.

If the tree only ever needs warm white on a timer, an ordinary string and a smart plug cost far less. The Govee set earns its price when both looks will get used.

## Choose the length by tree height

Govee pairs each length with a tree: 66 feet (20 m) for a 6-foot (1.8 m) tree, 99 feet (30 m) for 7.5 feet (2.3 m), 164 feet (50 m) for 9 feet (2.7 m) and 328 feet (100 m) for one around 18 feet (5.5 m) tall. Not every length is sold everywhere. Govee's US store has all four, its EU store the 20, 30 and 50 m sets, and its UK store only the 20 and 30 m sets. The 20 m set has 200 LEDs, about 4 inches (10 cm) apart. A full, wide tree uses more string per foot of height than a slim one, so treat the pairing as a minimum.

In the US, the two longest sets are not discounted: about $200 for 164 feet and $400 for 328 feet. Green wire is standard; white wire is in stock only for the 99-foot set.

Each set is one continuous run. On the 66-foot (20 m) set, a 4.9-foot (1.5 m) lead joins the control box to the first LED, with another 3.3 feet (1 m) of cable to the plug-in adapter, and the string is meant to be fixed at the base and wrapped upward. That keeps the power at floor level and gives animations a single path from bottom to top, which is easier to wrap coherently than a string that splits into two arms. Sets cannot be joined to one another, so buy the length the tree needs at the start.

## Shape mapping is the reason to open the app

Animated effects look best when the app knows where each LED sits. Govee's shape mapping uses a phone video of the installed string to locate the LEDs, then fits effects to the tree and lets you paint colors onto it with a finger. MatterAlpha's hands-on review found that about half of the built-in scenes use the mapped shape. Govee's first Christmas string lacked it, and it lives entirely in Govee Home.

The control box has a single button, for power (holding it resets the set). Brightness, color and scenes otherwise need a phone, a voice assistant or a smart-home app.

## Outdoors, protect the adapter

The strings are rated at least IP65 and work from -4°F to 104°F (-20 to 40°C), so a porch railing or a row of shrubs is a reasonable place for them. The plug-in adapter is the weak point. It is rated only IP44 on every set except the US 328-foot one, and belongs in a dry spot or an outdoor waterproof box. US sets should plug into a GFCI outlet outdoors. EU sets have a two-pin EU plug that Govee rates for Europe except the UK, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta, and UK sets have a UK plug. Govee's EU store ships the EU-plug set to Ireland and Malta anyway, while its UK store delivers only within the UK, so buyers in those three countries should look for the UK-plug version from a retailer that ships to them.

The US manual also calls this a seasonal product that is not intended for permanent installation, which sits awkwardly with the store's year-round outdoor pitch. For lights that stay on the eaves all year, buy a permanent kit; in North America, that means a set such as [Govee's Permanent Outdoor Lights](/devices/govee-matter-permanent-outdoor-lights). Govee's store policies give sets bought directly from Govee 12 months of warranty in the US and UK and 24 months in the EU.

## Matter handles the basics

The set joins a Matter controller directly over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, with no Govee hub or Thread border router. Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings then get on/off, brightness and a single color, which covers the tree coming on at sunset, going off at bedtime and answering voice commands. Scenes, gradients and shape-mapped effects stay in Govee Home, and MatterAlpha found that changing the color from a Matter app replaces whatever scene was running.

Two details save some frustration. The first Matter pairing has to happen within 15 minutes of powering the set on, so plug it in just before adding it to the Matter app. And Govee Home ties each set to one Govee account, which makes Matter the simpler way to give the rest of the household basic control.

## Prices in Europe and the UK

Govee's European and UK stores sell every length at full price, well above the US sale prices, and their only discounts are temporary coupon codes on some lengths. The 20 m set is about €110 in the EU and £110 in the UK, the 30 m set about €150 or £150, and the EU-only 50 m set about €220. At those prices, buy it for a tree where the color shows and shape mapping will get regular use. For a steady warm glow alone, an ordinary string on a smart plug costs a fraction as much.

## Govee or Nanoleaf

In North America, Nanoleaf's [Smart Holiday String Lights](/devices/nanoleaf-smart-holiday-string-lights) are the closest Matter alternative. That set puts 300 LEDs on about 79 feet of string split into two arms, has scene and brightness buttons on its controller and rates its strings IP44. Both give a Matter app the same basic controls. Govee's 66-foot set costs about $75 on sale against a $100 list price, and the 99-foot set just under $100 against $130. Nanoleaf's reference price is about $150, but its 300-LED set has repeatedly sold for about $75.

At similar sale prices, Nanoleaf puts 300 LEDs on about 79 feet against Govee's 200 on 66 feet, and its buttons let guests or children change the display without a phone, which suits a 6 to 8-foot indoor tree. At list prices, Govee's 66-foot set is about $50 cheaper. Choose Govee for a tree taller than about 8 feet, for a display that will mostly glow warm white, or for a porch where IP65 strings matter.
