# Google Nest Wifi Pro

Nest Wifi Pro is the Google Home pick when a router purchase and a Thread border router purchase should be the same device. It makes less sense if the network is already solved.

## Ecosystem Support

- Apple Home: Not listed
- Google Home: Supported
- Alexa: Not listed
- SmartThings: Not listed
- Home Assistant: Not listed

## Best For

- Google Home users replacing older Wi-Fi gear
- Homes that want Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi planning in the same hardware layer
- Buyers who already use Google Home to manage Nest and Android smart home devices

## Skip If

- Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant is the main ecosystem
- The router upgrade is unnecessary
- A smart display or TV streamer would sit closer to the Thread devices

## Setup Notes

- Set up Nest Wifi Pro in the Google Home app and keep it in the same home that will own the Matter devices.
- Confirm the network has IPv6 enabled before depending on Matter devices.
- Plan the Wi-Fi mesh first, then treat the Thread border router role as a useful bonus.

## Known Limitations

- Nest Wifi Pro is Google Home infrastructure, not a neutral Matter controller for other ecosystems.
- Router placement decisions should be made for network quality first, not only for Thread accessory range.
- Google Home device-type support changes by category, so verify the exact Matter device type before buying multiples.

## Pros

- Google Home hub for Matter devices
- Thread border router built into a Wi-Fi 6E router
- Good fit when the home is already replacing or expanding Wi-Fi
- Powered network hardware can be a practical Thread border router location

## Cons

- Google Home only as the primary ecosystem
- Overkill if the home only needs a cheap Thread border router
- Router placement and mesh design may not match every Thread coverage need

## Buy it when the router upgrade is part of the plan

Nest Wifi Pro is useful because Google lists it as both a Google Home Matter hub and a Thread border router. If the home already needs a Wi-Fi 6E router or mesh upgrade, it can solve the Matter infrastructure job at the same time.

That is the right reason to choose it. A router is a bigger purchase than a small smart display or speaker, so it should be justified by the network, not only by the Thread logo.

## What it fixes

Matter-over-Thread devices need a Thread border router, and Matter also depends on healthy local networking. Nest Wifi Pro keeps those concerns in the Google Home setup path for households that already want Google to manage the network.

That can be cleaner than buying a separate hub for Thread while the router remains an older weak point.

## Setup path

Set up the router through Google Home, place the mesh around Wi-Fi performance first, and confirm IPv6 is enabled. Google's Matter setup documentation calls out IPv6 as part of reliable Matter behavior.

After the network is stable, add Matter devices from Google Home and keep each manufacturer's app available for firmware updates and device-specific settings.

## Where it is the wrong buy

Skip Nest Wifi Pro if your existing network is already good and you only need Thread coverage. Nest Hub second generation or Google TV Streamer 4K may be a simpler buy.

Also skip it if another ecosystem owns the home. A Google router can still be a router, but the Matter controller and Thread path described here are Google Home features.
