Lights that switch off while someone reads or works quietly expose the limit of a motion sensor. Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E uses 60 GHz radar to keep reporting presence after large movement stops. The $49.99 sensor is a practical fix for one room when an Aqara Hub M3 is already running. Without that hub, the connection cost overwhelms the simple job.

## Choose one presence result, not a room map

FP1E is Aqara's simpler radar sensor. It reports whether the room is occupied and can distinguish moving from still status inside Aqara Home, but it does not offer the position zones or multi-person tracking of Aqara Presence Sensor FP2. That narrower scope suits an office, living room, or bedroom where an automation only needs to know when everyone has left.

Aqara specifies a radial range of up to 6 meters and a 120-degree field horizontally and vertically, widening to 180 degrees at close range. The company says a ceiling installation can cover up to 50 square meters, while a side installation can cover 35 square meters. Those are placement limits, not a promise that radar will interpret every room correctly. Matterhome has not tested its detection or clearing behavior.

## Hub M3 is the clear Matter route

The sensor itself is a Zigbee 3.0 accessory, not a native Matter or Thread device. Pair it in Aqara Home first. Hub M3 then translates the occupied or empty state and presents the sensor through its Matter bridge to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. A Thread border router is not required for this path, but the destination still needs its normal Matter controller.

Aqara broadly says FP1E works through a compatible Zigbee 3.0 hub, but its United States store page is inconsistent about the Camera Hub G2H family. One sentence excludes G2H Pro and another excludes G2H. Do not buy either camera hub for FP1E bridging based on that page alone. Hub M3 is the safer named route because Aqara separately documents it as a Matter bridge for existing Aqara Zigbee devices.

Expect the portable feature to be basic presence. Aqara Home can use moving or still status, duration, AI learning, and interference filtering, but Aqara does not document those controls as part of the Matter bridge. Test the actual occupancy entity and routine conditions in the destination platform before building an automation that turns off lights, heating, or cooling.

## Power and placement decide the purchase

FP1E needs 5 V at 1 A continuously. Its 2-meter USB cable makes power easier to reach, while the magnetic mount can aim the sensor from a wall, ceiling, or corner. The package list does not include a wall adapter, so account for a suitable USB power source and visible cable before choosing the final position.

Aqara says its adaptive software filters interference from curtains, fans, mirrors, electrical devices, and small pets. Treat that as a vendor claim to test in the real room. Temporarily mount the sensor, run the fan, open and close curtains and doors, let pets move normally, and sit in every place that should remain occupied. Only then use absence as a shutoff condition.

Buying a $159.99 Hub M3 only to bridge one $49.99 sensor is hard to defend.
